What's Copy got to do with Smooth?
-
I was just wondering if this little bug was confined to me and my workflow, or whether others have noticed it as well. I'll frequently select and copy a model...or part thereof...and paste it into another instance of SU. Sometimes to run a test render on it; sometimes merely to do a face count (ever since someone thought it was a good idea to drop the face/edge count from Entity Info and limit it to Model Info. I keep asking for it back, to no avail.)
Anyhow, when I've finished what I'm dong and return to the original model, more often than not I will find that whole sections of the model will have decided to unsmooth themselves in my absence. I haven't yet decided whether they are bits that have originally been smoothed with the dialog box or bits that I've run over with the eraser...or both. Moreover, the program is brazen enough to have actually recorded this unbidden command and has added it to the Undo menu.
Anyone else notice the same thing? This isn't a new thing. I seem to recall it happening for at least the last 3 or 4 versions. -
I think ThomThom reported something similar once and it was related to something being selected and the SU window minimized or something I cannot clearly remember as I have never experienced it (maybe it is some HW specific thing?)

Yes - it's a bloody annoying bug that bites me all too often! x_X
If I have smooth geometry selected, minimize the window - or do something which cause the window to become unresponsive for a moment - a Smooth operation is suddenly applied to the selected mesh. It's so bad that I've become into the habit of deselecting immediately after I've completed an operation. -
Thanks Thom. I'm glad it's not just me. I can't think that it's hardware related, as it's happened on various machines. I must test whether I'm actually leaving the geometry selected after copy; and see what happens if I deselect. It's got so bad for me, I frequently save and exit that instance of SU entirely.

So do I Allen. copying from one opening of sketchup to another is possible but dangerous.
So why can't windows users open up multiple windows of sketchup like Mac users can??

I have multiple SketchUp windows open all the time on my Windows machine.
I think it's related to your graphic card if you are having problems with that. -
I think he means why can't Windows mimic Mac in terms of multiple 'tabs' under one window?

I experience same thing, but haven't figured it out that it has something to do with copying.
I quite often find that parts of a model, usually components, have smoothing removed. For some strange reason edges that has been smoothed, lose that property.
I do my work usually in SU8 under Vista. -
Hi, I am experiencing similar problem even after I perform a selection only. It happens when I do a region select on part of a large mesh (say 25K faces). At the moment a finish region select operation (release left mouse button) SketchUp freezes for a few seconds and comes back with the selected portion smoothed with the current smoothing option. The smoothing can even be undone. It happens in all modes of selection (+, +-, or -). Triple select or Ctrl-A typically does not suffer from this. It is so annoying...
