Are You A SketchUp Guru?
what makes someone a SketchUp Guru? are you a guru? am I a Guru? Wikipedia has the following for its explanition.
@unknownuser said:
A guru (Sanskrit: गुरु) (Gurmukhi: ਗੁਰੂ) is one who is regarded as having great knowledge, wisdom and authority in a certain area, and who uses it to guide others (teacher). Other forms of manifestation of this principle also include parents, school teachers, non-human objects (books) and even one's own intellectual discipline.[1]
if we follow this definition which I believe fits very well, then SketchUcation is full of Gurus... Gurus galore... but let's test ourselves and see if we truly are.
here are some questions to ask yourself to see if you're a SketchUp Guru, feel free to add some of your own.
-
you might be a SketchUp Guru if you find yourself preaching to others about the wonders of SketchUp and insisting that they "get it and try it out".
-
you might be a SketchUp Guru if you check SketchUcation hourly to see if there's a new plugin or extension you're missing out on.
-
you might be a SketchUp Guru if you have no less than 7 renderers installed in Sketchup.
-
you might be a SketchUp Guru if you have so many plugins that you need a second monitor just to hold the toolbars.
-
you might be a SketchUp Guru if you race to be the first response to a question in the "noobie" forum.
-
you might be a SketchUp Guru if you have your autosave set to 5 minutes...
-
you might be a SketchUp Guru if you're still excited every time you open SketchUp.
-
you might be a SketchUp Guru if you've spent hours making a component, ruby script, or tutorial only to find someone else has already made that component, ruby script, or tutorial; only better...
-
you might be a SketchUp Guru if you e-mailed so many bug splats to Google that they block your e-mail address.
-
you might be a SketchUp Guru if you created an entire web community for SketchUp after the company itself made the mistake of closing its own.
so what are some of the things that you think makes a SketchUp Guru?

Damned I am affraid to say that I am a quasi Su-Guru 8/10
-
I was able to tick most of those.
I have a question on point 6

Surely a 'Guru' would have a longer or even no autosave? As the skills and work flow are a such a high standard that they no longer need SU to do it for them.

CTRL + S is your friend. I hug it frequently

Yeah, however autosave saved my ass like tree times last night.
I do not have 7 renderers. Just 5 (I think).
-
My autosave is on but i disregard it and rely on my friend CTRL + S.
Render Engines -
Twilight
Thea
Podium (don't use)
VRay (don't use)
Composer (rarely)
Lumion (don't have machine to power it nicely)Am I a Guru? No
Am I a Habitual User? Yes -
I'm not definitely a guru...missed to be the first to answer this question
no, wait...this is not the noobie forum, I still have a chance
-
Hi folks.
My Autosave is off since, when working on a large file, I don't like to see SU stops for many seconds when doing the save. I am talking about saves that take more thna 5 seconds.
However, I have the habit of saving manually very often.
Just ideas.

Hardly a guru. . .No incense, no mountain top sanctuary, no spinning wheel
-
Hmmm....being a GURU in SU isn't like someone won't 1.ever need to ask anything
2.ever need a plugin
and SU does what the gurus mind commandsgeeeee..... am I that guru?
-
Nobody is a guru, as SU is a developing app, new plugins daily, once you think you know everything a newer faster easier way becomes available.
I consider myself proficient, maybe even fluent, but not a guru, and probably never will be.
Anyone ever go two or more weeks without using SU? is it just me or do you need to spend a day or more getting back into it? -
Few months back I spent a month with Rhino. The transition back was awkward. Now I'm in the land of Blender, which is a tour de force, and loving it! But nothing touches SU for navigation, ease of use and adaptability.
Jack of all trade, master of none

I agree.

I don't know. I can't seem to go more than 6 hours without opening SketchUp. I opened it twice today before I left for work at 6 am.

Dave, yes you probably are a guru and I am one of your disciples but it's also plain that you are an addict!
-
Another probable indicator has often been mentioned before and it is the tendency to try and orbit the camera in any program showing a graphic that you happen to have running - drives me nuts when Safari won't do it!

TobyI think a Guru would know that SU would being crashing momentarily because of the huge number of double plugins and outdated plugins he had installed at any given time...
no really I was just trying to be funny with most of it... but some were serious like the last one Coen qualifies if not just for creating this place, but for his extensive knowledge as well.
and Solo, I'm sorry to inform you... you are a Guru. but I expect your humility, it's just part of you being a Guru.

I agree a Guru would have a sixth sense for when a plugin is going to make SU hang till eternity.
