After upgrading to Sketchup 8 from 7.1, I modified several models that were originally made in SU 7.1 then saved in SU 8. I also upgrade to SU Viewer 8 from Googles download page and installed it then started it. However, when I try to view models save from SU8 it said I have vs 7.1 and needed vs 8. I checked the version of the SU Viewer I just installed and it shows version 7.1. So I guess even though at Google's download page it says version 8, it's really vs 7.1. So now I have to wait until they upgrade to Viewer 8 before I can view anything made in SU8.

Fwiw, you can save models made in 8 as su7 files or earlier.
The option is in the 'save as' dialog.

          Thanks Jeff,

I was just wondering why Google's download page says it's version 8 when it's actually version 7.

I am also hoping google updates the viewer to SU 8. At the moment it's 7.1.
Yes we can resave from 8 to 7.1 in SU, but I am sure to forget to do that sometimes. Probably when I send out the file to meet a client deadline! 😳
When I go to the viewer download page I don't see any mention of an SU 8 viewer though? Where did you see that?

This is the download page someone at this forum posted.

It's hard to tell what the actual file is since they don't label the files with version numbers.

Mmm...let's hope google update to an SU 8 viewer soon, because as you said it's still SU 7.1 with that link.

FWIW this is the page I go to for the viewer, but it's the same result as your link.

I prefer clients to use the viewer because the tool set is quicker for them to get used to.
Hopefully Google will get around to it soon. Not a big task surely?

Any Googlers out there? Is the SU Viewer going to be updated?

Indeed, Google Sketchup Viewer 8 expected... right now I had a bad surprise when I installed it and was version 7.1.
Maybe somebody from Google is reading this and... ☀

Instead of SketchUp Reader, it would be cool to have the model password protected and open read-only in SketchUp free.

Yeah right... and to stay and explain to every client to not be afraid of buttons 😆
Sketchup viewer is good for st*pid clients... just install and use Orbit and Pan 😄
A kind of portable Sketchup Viewer would be even better, so the client doesn't have to install anything... or, to go on with my fantasy: a built-in file (sort of export from sketchup and - voila !) viewer 💚

Yes, indeed. A viewer and file combination that cannot be disassembled but can be run on any computer (regardless of OS - maybe even linux 😒 )

I doubt that Google will ever do something like that. More, they doubt too 😆

We hear this request all the time, but realistically we’re not likely to ever make a version of SketchUp that runs as a native client application on Linux. However, SketchUp can be run effectively on Linux using Wine, and we’re keen to improve that where it is practical to do so.]
