SU 9 Wishlist

I think there'll be a 8.1 before 9.0 - SU6 and SU7 both had interim releases. And 7.1 was a big one.

64 bit!

I'm curious of what the Google team says at basecamp.
Are they proud of this version 8 release?
I mean, what have they been doing each day since last release?
The list of new features and bug fixes is very short. No 64 bit.
No UV enhancements.
No animation enhancements.
No shadow bug fix.
No multiple lights or shadow enhancements.
No Open GL enhancements like shaders.I didnt expect animation to get improved or even the shadow bug for that matter but I find this release very disappointing.
It's like they havent listened to their customers at all.

Haha, was wondering how long it would take.
Just got one point:

Yes, I agree. I would have also said that 8 was released because of deadlines (and all those silly rumours about SU being abandoned). FWIW, there have been some very big announcements recently in the world of CAD, including that biggy from Autodesk. I would imagine Google/@Last are just trying to hold on to their customer base?

Which announcements? I've seen some including Autodesk products able to read buildings of the 3dWarehouse. But from your point of view, which are the most important announcement or features recently added in CADs?

Yes, I did. Well I'd rather write that I didn't realized that's such a big achievement. And what about Revit? Indeed, I imagine Autodesk still have Autocad on Windows due to legacy issue. If they could they would have made everybody switch for Revit or Inventor.

basically, i just wish for better performance in certain areas.
i did an intersect operation last night which took 3.5 hours to complete (about 800 low poly spheres intersecting with a triangulated mesh)..
of course, higher poly count.. i personally don't need 2 million in a model but i'm occasionally up in the 150,000 range and i wish it performed the same as say 20,000.
UV mapping upgrades (even if it's opening up more of the API to the scripters and let them make it happen).. [and even then, i'm not quite sure what i mean by better UV.. i just know that if i texture a curved surface, i'd rather it not be divided up the way it currently is.]
and on that note, i actually wouldn't wish for much of a change at all to sketchup except root level performance.. i'd like to be able to customize through plugins instead of having a gazillion options that i don't need in the main app.. (assuming, for every 1 feature or tool i want/need, there would have to be 20 others to accommodate everyone else's wishes)
so yeah, i'm sure the ruby writer's have plenty of wishes so i'm actually going to hand all of my remaining wishes to them and they can use them as they please -
Hello,
I think add rotate tool in to the material >> edit
see below ....... -

I posted the above on the Google Moderator that everyone has access to here:

My wish for Sketchup 9.
I get three types of CAD drawings. The first is the original cad drawings, which I can use without any problems. The second is a PDF scanned drawing of an older hand drawing, that never was a CAD drawing. Which, I can import into Adobe Elements and turn parts of the drawing into PNG files which I can use, with some difficulty. And the third type is a PDF drawing either saved or printed from a CAD drawing.
With the last drawing type, I have a program, PFD2DFX, which helps, and give me the opportunity to work with the drawing.
So my wish is to have a native PDF to Sketchup importer, such that I don’t need to use another program to convert the PDF to a workable Sketchup drawing. This importer would only work on PDF files made from CAD drawing by the process of either exporting or printing from the CAD program to a PDF drawing.
It would also be nice if one could import a scanned PDF drawing into Sketchup, like you can do now with a PNG or JPG file.
Thanks for listening and the great Basecamp.

That's odd. Can't you do this? I can do it here- I just tried. Perhaps it's a Windows thing?

No, I believe that the Mac's can, but not the windows.

something that i think would be interesting, helpful, as well as just plain cool (and something i feel google might be into) is a web version of sketchup.
i upload a model then other people can join in and watch, navigate, edit, voice conference, etc..
this is already happening in basic form but google seems to be one of the best companies to really make something like this work properly. -
...or even just a web-based Sketchup viewer so a client doesn't have to download anything...make it have the ability to support scenes for easier navigation.
