I'm trying to put together store layouts using many different components that have identical materials. All these components have multiple levels (components within the component). I need a way to replace a material with another across the whole model I.E everything thats metal turns to wood for example. Ive tried the context menu select and the holding shift while paintbucketing but niether seems to work unless i explode everything which is not an option. Any ideas? Thanks alot.

Hi Tudy, the SU's built in method is: right click on a face with the material you want to change-->select-->all with same material. Then pick the new material and paint one face. The new material will be applyed to all the selected faces. Also TIG made a plugin for that. You can download the last version of it here.
Hope this helps a bit. ๐Ÿ˜„

The select via the context menu seems to leave alot of surfaces out, probably due to grouping. The ruby script is great though! Thanks alot much appreciated.

If you want to visually pick the materials you replace from the model, you can use this one: http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=26013
