      Hi,

I am trying to model a globe which has windows and doors in it. Using the curve tool doesn't seem to give an accurate line to allow me to add colour fills for the windows or create openings for doors.

I have attached a sketch model of the globe i am working on if anyone has any suggestions.

      Many Thanks!

      Jonathan

Switch on View > Hidden Geometry and you will see the facets of the Sphere.
You can make a sphere more or less faceted when you make it, but not easily afterwards.
Your windows must match these facets or sensible subdivision of them.
Glass is usually in flat sheets anyway.
Tip: to make smoothed [dotted] lines 'solid' use Erase Tool with Shift+Ctrl keys held down and they'll "un-smooth" into normal edges [also Erase+Ctrl=Smooth, Erase+Shft=Hide]
I adjusted some shapes, erased some lines, drew some new lines and took out unneeded diagonals and finally used the free Windowizer Tool from Smustard to add the glazing etc..
I suggest you try the steps yourself...SPHERE.skp

            Cheers Tig,

            That makes sense!

Don't think i need to put so much detail in at this stage for the windows but it looks really good.

ThomThom... as with all of these plug ins, do you just need to extract files from plugins like this one and double click on the .rb file? I never quite understand this as it opens in adobe on my computer?

            Thanks guys

rb files are simple text files. Do nothing but copy them from the zip archive into the Plugins folder of your SU application in Program Files/Google/Google SketchUp. Once you restart SU, they will be activated.

Cheers Gai. I'm not sure why but although i loaded the shape bender plug in, when i open up sketch up it keeps telling me it didn't load properly.

is there a post anywhere which has all these handy plugin's or do you just have to get them from the various sources?

                Jonathan

Did you also download/install Progressbar.rb as suggested in Chris' post?
It is needed (and several other plugins also use it).

                    Hi Jonathan, hi folks.

For a quick study, you may try the ideas in the attached SU file.

                      In complement of Jean's "Idea",

Here is a Youtube video which shows how it is interesting to make your globe a component before adjust the pushpull shapes of doors and windows. This way, you enter the component before make an intersection with the model and then you have no cleaning job to do 😉

(re:I have found this video on a thread where TIG was explaining to someone how to weld two tubes together but I don't recover this trhead.)
