      Hi all,

Instead of littering the competition thread (n°6 :Castles), I decided to post the animation as a gallery thread.
I am disqualified anyway, as this went way beyond the time limit 😄.

It is a Belgian band called Milow (song: 'You don't know'). They also did a very good 'unplugged' cover of Ayo Technology.

I modeled everything in Sketchup ( a lot of bugsplats) , but after that I took the model to Cinema 4D to animate and render.
Slowly I am trying to faze out Sketchup from my workflow for some tasks like setting up scenes, rendering, animation and adding higher poly objects.
With Sketchup 7 , Google is not taking the direction with Sketchup that I like to see.

I completely agree, I had to do a masterplan before December and Sketchup seriously let me down. So what's the workflow like with c4d, how long was setting up, rendering and the general interface? I used it very briefly once before, but it didn't strike me as user-friendly on first impressions. I'm either going to go with modo or c4d I think

I might go for Cheetah 3D, I don't have a thousand bucks to spend right now. I've used modo, it seems great, but it's a little pricey for me. I'm currently using the demo of Cheetah, and it's fairly simple to say the least.

Yes, it is becoming more and more difficult to keep on using sketchup in a professional workflow.
Especially for architecture projects, clients expect visual candy these days, a lot of props on the scene, modeled surroundings etc...

Sketchup is not adapted to that (unresponsive on bigger models and a sloppy platform for 3td party render engines) .
I think most Arch firms are experiencing the same thing.

Modo is a good piece of software so I have been told, especially for rendering animation.
Cinema4D is good as well, although most architecture firms will prefer going Rhino, as it is also very suited as a secondary CAD drafter besides Autocad and it can model virtually everything with high precision...

To quote a developer of one of the expensive high-end Render engines for sketchup:

I'm going to leave my comments on SU development out, but I'm glad to hear that you're moving over to Rhino. Rhino is really a great app and its capabilities are growing with every version and every plugin that they put out there. Its really flexible and you can make it dance around a fire if you want to. IMHO, Sketchup just isn't something that is suitable for professional use as it lacks the ability to be able to create and deal complex work efficiently...

I am trying some programs in demo to make renders (artantis, C4d, Cheetah,...) to mak up my mind wich one to buy.
What is your advice, how do you make the export - import from SU to C4d ?

                                    Thanks for the advice.

                                    Gerd

The best way to get a sketchup model into Cinema 4D is by using the .fbx format.
Don't use .3ds as that typically triangulates all geometry and you don't want that.
Quads are much handier than triangles to modify in C4D (and in any other modeler).

You can use the built in renderer of C4D or you can buy Vray for C4D supplementary as well.

Modo also has a good renderer built in (especially for animation)and probably is better affordable.

There is no 3D tool easier than SU to be creative.

Yes , Sketchup is a shiny little gem.
I just have a problem with the course Google is taking with it.

We discussed this in depth at our office and we came to the conclusion that Google is not taking the Pro version serious . So we are currently experimenting with other 3D design/Visualisation software, either to replace Sketchup completely or partially.

Another interesting discussion we had was about what exactly makes sketchup such a wonderful tool as opposed to the big modelers.
We concluded that it was the fact that Sketchup can do a 1000 operations with only 3 tools, while the monster modelers use a 1000 tools to do just 3 operations.

That is what makes learning one of the monstruous modelers such a pain. It takes you a looong time before you are at the level of a moderate skilled user....while Sketchup has that immediate 'bang!, I got it' feeling to it.

Too bad Google treats Sketchup Pro as a toy.
I am still in love with the toy though.... 😄....but sometimes a job needs to be done.
