I'm hoping there is a way to remove this tool or at least remove it from the toolbar, perhaps via customisation.
Anyone have a pointer or two?

Remove it from the Large Toolset Toolbar? That's hard coded so we are stuck with it.
The Getting Started Toolbar has it nested so you don't see it.

I've made custom toolbars for the native tools and left out the tools I don't use. You could do the same thing. Save the real estate for tools you do use.

All non extension toolbars are customizable, so you can simply drag the lasso off if you don't want it and arrange the rest as you do want them.
People often complain that have lost a tool, this is because they drag without ctrl, which is what you actually want in this case.
