Right-click to "Orbit" & Middle-click to "Pan"

i disagree.
being a lefty who uses a mouse with the buttons still set to right-handed controls, i actually find it easier and quicker than using the shift key.
so you see, there are two solutions, either:
a) become left handed
or
b) set your mouse to left handed settings

I tried using my middle finger on the wheel and man, that was difficult. Guess if I did it enough I could get used to it, but . . .

what a cool thing (middle mouse button + left mouse button = pan)!
I am honestly considering to change my habits of using a mouse. always having three fingers on the three main buttons may not be too bad...
by the way: I love the possibility of "smoothly" switching between orbit and pan mode (by pressing Shift or Left Mouse Button) without the need of releasing the Scroll Wheel, so that you can switch between orbiting and paning several times within one movement.
other programs dont support that and it is sooo cooool!!!

For me the problem with the middle + left buttons to pan is that I use my pointing (?) finger for the middle button, too, so it's a bit inconvenient to start using another finger at this age...

Yeah, it means either permanently switching to always use the middle finger for scrolling or it means switching just for the pan. I find either option very difficult at this point.
What would have been easier is instead to use the scroll wheel with the pointer finger and the right button at the same time. That wouldn't have required any physical re adjustment. I wonder if we can force that somehow with mouse setting?Nope, can't. I have a great mouse with programmable buttons but it doesn't allow for programming of a double button action. So the only way to do it would be to swap the functionality of the left and right buttons, which I certainly don't want to do.

Did you ever find a solution for this? I also would rather use the wheel + right button tp pan instead of how it is default. I mean there is some line of code that says if you hold down the wheel and press the left mouse button you start the pan function. How hard would it be to change that to the right button? lol. I was trying to find the file and line but can't.

Buy a SpaceNavigator or Spacemouse and eliminate all of the finger shifting.

or autohotkey to achieve this, the first are easier to use, in both you can configure this behavior by application so it won´t interfere with other programs.
I use a autohotkey script and have a friend that prefer X-mouse. -

It is possible to set your mouse's right-click as something else other than 'context-click' (bring up the menu). Here's how:
On a mac you can invoke the context-click menu by holding 'control' and then clicking.
To remap your right-click mouse button you can use a third-party software called SteerMouse. You make an application-specific remapping (so that it only remaps it in SketchUp) to a keyboard shortcut. In your example you would set the keyboard shortcut to 'o' which is the default SketchUp keyboard shortcut to invoke the orbit tool -

Curiously no one has addressed Gaeius's question. If right click is used for Orbit, how does one acess the Context menu?
