      Hey everyone, got a question:

Sometimes i compose scenes using DAZ 3D figures for tough perspective shots, and in DAZ i can import SU models as .obj but small details get lost in translation and when i print out the scene as a 2D jpg i cant make out the details on the models, so my question is is there any software where i can import both DAz figures and SU models to compose a scene without losing any quality of detail? BTW its no coincidence i use DAZ and SU since both are free (very limited expense budget) so i was wondering if there's a free alternative to what im looking for.

Recently i've been trying to compose my scenes seperately, posing my figures in DAZ and my background elements in SU and putting the scene together in Photoshop (ver. 7), but aligning the perspectives can be a pain, and i really like the b&w feature on SU...damn, im blanking out on the proper name for the setting, like this (borrowing this from spdesign hope he doesnt mind just for demo purposes):

      http://www.sketchucation.com/forums/scf/download/file.php?id=9184&mode=view

anyway which DAZ doesnt have that, i dont need color or rendering for my purposes, just contour lines. If there was a way to import DAZ figures into SU that would be awesome.

Anyway, sorry for the long rambling post, i hope you guys know what im talking about and can help a noob out, thnx.

Make sure your units in DAZ are the same as in SU, example if DAZ is Metric in meters, then make sure SU is the same before importing.

          hey solo

It's not so much the units that is the problem, i've experimented with various settings. I export the SU obj model in inches and import it as a carrera unit which has it as 1 unit= 1 in into DAZ. It's probably just the low poly count in the SU models themselves that just doesnt translate into what i have in mind. Like i said, I work and print almost exclusively in hidden line facestyle white background setting in SU. I guess it's best to show you how i used to work when i had Poser before i lost the cd and no longer had it on my PC, with Poser i could export their figures into SU and create my scene easily

and doing the reverse (importing from SU) into DAZ doesnt quite work for me for my practical use, that's why i was looking into a 3rd party software that could help me recreate this.

BTW this also begs to question: if SU can export files as .obj, why cant it import .obj files?

hmm, ok so here's where im at:

I found a plug in allowing me to import .obj files (exported from DAZ 3D)into SU, problem is the models come in incomplete, the figure comes with missing hands, no face, things of that sort, not to mention it takes forever to load and sometimes makes SU non responsive so i have to shut it down (each .obj file is on avg 9 mb)

Then i remembered i used to import my Poser figures as .3ds files, a feature DAZ doesnt have (exports figures as .bvh, .dae, .obj, .u3d) files were much smaller and no problem to load on SU.

              more experimenting....

Any further success with your experimenting?

Do I understand that beyond a certain "period"... we should let old posts die?
I couldn't find a more current thread on DAZ and SU use... sorry.
Is there a more current thread that deals with this subject? I'd love to read up on it if so. πŸ˜„

Actually, I recently had a similar reply on an older post that said, "I'm four years older!".
I'm digging them out of the dust for this.... cough, cough.

We archive no threads here, it is just that the topic probably goes back to a time when there was a certain excitement around Daz and SU.

Daz models tend to be a bit of a choke for SU though.

here is where you probably get more responses to Daz/SU workflow. but a search for sketchup returns only 3 results. 2 of which are vray.

new threads are better for learning i find.

especially ones with good title descriptions...

do NOT go to Renderosity. trust me. the trolls are out of control there. the guys that know their stuff are packing their bags and leaving.

Thanks guys. Actually, with little information on the subject, I decided in the end to import from Zbrush. having the hands sculpted for the product ended up being much more realistic in the end (I think anyway). And, though still curious... it is not pressing as it was. So, again... thank you.
