I'm surprised at how many FDM printers are doing the same thing as everybody else without anything new or innovative, but I guess this at least helps push the industry forward with competitive pricing.

It's great to see so many players getting into stereolithography. I'm interested to see the rap sheet on the Autodesk printer.
Hopefully we will continue to see prices come down. I would love to see a good SLA printer for around $1500.

I'm also continually surprised by Makerbots crappy specs. The layer resolution on this Mini is 200 microns! That stinks. I also don't think any of their machines are self leveling. Ugh.

Autodesk to launch its own 3D printer this year! | by Mike Lucey

Autodesk announced its consumer 3D printer at the MakerCon conference in California, along with an open-software 3D printing platform called 'Spark'.

Autodesk's new printer uses Stereolithography (SLA) technology to create objects. SLA 3D printer hardens liquid plastic (photopolymer) with an ultraviolet (UV) layer by layer and converts liquid plastic into solid objects. The process can deliver smoother and more complex objects than desktop FDM 3D printers.

The price is not revealed, but Autodesk CEO Carl Bass said it would likely be in the $5,000 range. Both the printer and the platform will be available "later this year," said the company.

I look at SLA printer as a (level 2) printer, high detail prints HD, fast, high power, aim for the business world

I look at FDM printer as a (level 1) printer, low detail prints LD, low power, aim for the home users

A Pro users would have a uses for both one for prof and one for finial

A new design type of FDM printer is coming that can switch gears to a smaller gauge filament

A Microscope-Inspired Extruder Design Could Add Fine Detail To 3D Prints | TechCrunch
"The various head sizes will allow users to print large gauge plastic for the structural parts of a 3D print and thinner filament for the finer parts. This improves the resolution of the outside surface while improving stability for the inside parts. When the head spins it can cut off the hot filament for a moment and then extrude it after it heats up. This could add a little time to the printing process, but it’s definitely a cool idea."

                          http://tctechcrunch2011.files.wordpress.com/2014/05/crownextruder-4nozzles.jpg?w=615

"Why is this important? Because this sort of printing, called fused deposition modeling, though expanding, is highly limited in terms of resolution and speed. There are far better ways to print out there, but FDM is the cheapest and this could both save time and filament as it extrudes fat lines where things can be messy and fine lines when high-resolution detail is needed."

Just so people have an idea of what the difference looks like when speaking of layer resolution, here are a couple of examples.

Layer resolution of 200 microns, or .2mm
This is the current minimum layer resolution of the Makerbot mini and older FDM printers.

                            http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a51/xiombarg001/200u_zps2e33427f.jpg

Layer resolution of 100 microns, or .1mm
Keep in mind that this picture example is not as magnified as most of the other pictures, so it might look smoother than some of the other examples.
Many FDM printers have this resolution including the higher end Makerbot models.

                            http://i9.photobucket.com/albums/a51/xiombarg001/bb412ff2d20a2e4a02da6e92fee345db_large_zps84057751.jpg

Layer resolution of 50 microns, or .05mm
This is the minimum resolution of many older SLA printers and newer FDM printers.

Layer resolution of 25 microns, or .025mm
This is the minimum resolution of the Form1 and many SLA printers (usually between 25-40 micron minimum). Some of the newer FDM printers such as the Cel-Robox have also announced such resolution capability by controlling the resin flow by valves instead of merely controlling the feed rate of the filament as it passes through the nozzle, hence getting a more refined stream.
