I've always wondered that myself. πŸ˜’

How does a model like that get 20K downloads when it can't be downloaded?

I assume it was available for awhile and then at some point the author made it unavailable for download. I've uploaded a few models and I think I've got a couple that aren't available for download, but they aren't publicly viewable.

It seems to be an issue where you can have a model that's publicly viewable but only downloadable by collaborators (people you specifically invite). It should be the case that only the collaborators can view it if only they can download it.

There are many GE modellers who do not want to share their models for download but only for GE. Now if those can be seen (but not downloaded), it is okay. For a simple loo, I do not see the reason either.

Maybe those authors of the models in question want to be asked?

I also wondered why some models were shown but not downloadable and then saw a note on some of the models from "Cordelle" that they were locked because someone stole them and re-posted as their own. Maybe as DesertRaven suggests, Cordell might release them to you if asked. The toilet was Cordelle's, the next model in line was a urinal by Cordell that was not locked

From the 3D Warehouse policy page:

Rights granted to other end users of the Services. You give other end users of the Services a perpetual, sublicensable, irrevocable, worldwide, royalty-free, and non-exclusive license to reproduce, adapt, modify, translate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute Existing Geolocated Models, Existing Non-Geolocated Models, New Models and related content and derivative works thereof which you submit, post or display on or through, the Services

It would seem that locking models violates the terms of service of the 3D Warehouse. I wonder if there is any way to "unlock" models based on these terms?

There isn't any way to lock a model and prevent it from being modified so why are you looking for a way to unlock them?

The Lock/Unlock for components/groups is not a secure lock.

I thought the 'locking' mechanism was a method of avoiding problems during a build, when you have several versions of the same component for example. A good way to avoid messing up and it is what I use it for. Perhaps the component was left 'locked' by mistake, either way not a problem to 'unlock' it'.
