DWG import problem - Windows 7 / SU 8

I have been experiencing an inability to import DWG / DXF files into SketchUp 8 (most recent build) on Windows 7. I have several plugins and ruby scripts installed, don't know if that is the problem or if the issue is with SU. Any advice on how to track down the problem and fix it would be most welcome.

Unless you have SU Pro, this is not a "bug" as SU Free users are not supposed to have the ability to import dwg/dxf files. That's not a recent news however. So what's up with your problem? There are solutions just tell what the issue is.

I use the Pro version.
I cannot open any version of dwg/dxf created by my copy of Autocad LT 2012 with SU 8 on Windows, nor can I open them on SU 7 on Mac (PPC). I can import a dwg / dxf created by Autocad into my Mac 2d application (PowerCadd), save back to dwg or dxf, then open easily on either versions of SU (SU 7 on the Mac, SU 8 on the PC).
It sounds like I need to tweak something in Autocad 'save as' dialog, but I am not sure. Any ideas?thx for the help!

It's probably because currently Sketchup Pro only imports DWG/DXF version up to something like 'r2010'.
However, it's easy enough in AutoCAD/AnotherCAD to use 'Save_as' and save it as an earlier version - as a DWG OR DXF.
Because Sketchup is only interested in 'geometry' a VERY early version will import with no discernible difference from "today's"...
Because you are only interested in a limited amount of data from the CAD file it's advisable to make a copy of it... then delete non-useful parts, purge, audit and save_as as a usable rNNNN version... -
We have the same issue - Sketchup 8 Pro crashes when TRYING to import a .DWG file. BUT - I think the issue is related to Sketchup accessing windows 7 explorer folders that have .DWG files within it. That is when the BUGsplat crash actually occurs. We can't even get to the point of selecting the .dwg file - sketchup crashes EVERY time on ALL of our work stations. We own 5 Pro licenses via network. Our PC computers very in configurations but are all Windows 7 64 bit with no plugins installed. Although we have reinstalled Sketchup 8 cleanly multiple times, we can replicate this crash reliably when accessing network drives, sometimes importing from local drive works. Any help would be appreciated as this crash has crippled us over the last few months. As a work around we have been resorting to re installing Sketchup 6 and importing Dwg files as Skethchup 6 Pro is very stable. Can anyone help us?

Same here. Splats before I even select the dwg file I want to import, which makes the Autocad version a moot point. Thought I had to reinstall SU 8 but I guess it won't help. Any further thoughts on this?

Though a little out of topic, I'll add my importing problem.
SU 8, mac build, all latest updates, OSX10.6.8: The 3ds importer is broken, crashes SU.SU 7 works just fine.

Could imagine that this problem has something to do with user rights of the folders affected.
You may want try if running SU w/ admin rights does have an influence on the effect:
"Right Click on SU > Properties > Compatibility > Run w/ Admin Rights"
If the file browser dialog already stalls by simply opening it, this may also have something to do w/ unreliable network resources. Even inaccessible or broken network printers might cause this effect.

I have the same problem. Bugsplat when navigating for DWGs.
I have tried running as Administrator and get the same error.

80% of the time, if I selected Sketchup Pro 8 "File -> Import...", I immediately got the Bugsplat, and Sketchup would close. If I kept relaunching Sketchup, and selecting Import, eventually the Import Browser would remain open and allow me to import the dwg or dxf file. I figured it might be due to my Autocad 2006 program (which is technically incompatible with Windows 7, even though it does seem to work okay), so I uninstalled Autocad 2006. Now I no longer get the Bugsplat. I installed Autocad 2006 on a different machine than the machine that I run Sketchup on.
Of course, that solution is also a work around, because it would be better to be able to run both applications on the same machine. I have been looking around for a newer Autocad version (Windows 7 compatible) to see if that will help, but it sounds like you all are saying that the Bugsplat will still occur, and that Trimble (and Autodesk?) will need to fix the bug.
