What do people use SketchUp for?
-
I am writing an informative article which I would like to start with "Most people use SketchUp to XXX and YYY..." But I realized I don't know what most people use SketchUp for.
I think I will run a poll to see what people are using SketchUp for, for example:
- 3D Massing studies
- Home Improvement Design
- Sun and Shadow Studies
- Renderings for Presentations
- Construction Documents
etc.
If I could get a good list of 10 items for the poll, it would be useful.
What do you use it for? and/or what items should I include in my list of 10 to be sure to catch the top 2 or 3?
-
I use or have used SU in the past for the following:
- 3D Massing studies
- Home Improvement Design
- Landscape Design
- Sun and Shadow Studies
- Renderings for Presentations
- Construction Illustrations
- Content creation
- Modeling tutorials
- Space planning (for moving or storing objects)
- Organic Modeling
-
- For Fun
-
- For SU Content
And when I can figure out how to print a pizza I will use it for dinner.
-
That's a good question Al, here's my few cents:
- architectural visualization
- architectural design
- site planning
- space planning/ layout
- product design
- interior design
- making 3D models of objects for use in other software
- fun!
-
For the fun : can be used for any visual colorized
Or for anything else
Here for an animation for Go Game initiation

mostly a combo of what Eric,Andy, and dave said..
I have used it for graphic design a couple of times.
(3D text.. rendered.. for a logo) -
Set, prop, and vehicle design -- with an eye towards rendering said elements into a fictitious scene as concept/pre-viz imagery.
Best,
Jason. -
game modding! I remember years ago doing something strange like extracting files from a google earth file in order to get it into blender, and the oblivion!

Dodging the family when they get on my nerves..."piss off I'm busy"
-
Here's the list so far:
This might be enough to start a poll. (Does SketchUcation support polls from users?)
I am not looking for 20 different uses - although the list is very interesting - but now to see which ones are the uses most used.
If you have any other ideas which we should add to this list, add some posts.
Thanks,
Al

I agree, I have done this a couple of times with In-Laws and my wife's relatives...

I believe you can add animation and tutorial
-
Something which I don't that I have recently been doing is light fixture design. Perhaps there is not much of that going on but as likely is the fact that folks are protective of their work; that certainly has kept me from posting more of it, as if someone might think my concepts worthy and would evilly profit from my glorious work!
(Yes, the limits of SU alone for this are clear - creating the actual light emitting source (without renderers or add-ons).)
On the other hand, all you manufacturers out there, PM me with your offers, please. (BTW, that's a joke, not a solicitation.)
Otherwise, architecture and fun, and self-aggrandizement.

There's a poll creation tab next to the one for uploading attachments, Al.
My use now is content creation...although I started using it for straight book illustration. Dorling Kindersley type stuff...cutaways of castles etc. Native output was, and still is, near perfect for that.

Illustrations:
- model objects arrangements
- site layout
- to screen cut jpg
- to screen cut avi
- illustrations to a word documents.
- 3d geometry drawings
- white board
- prospective spacing
Helps to fast track redlines or ideas
-
Thanks for your ideas everyone.
I have put these into a poll if you want to slip over and enter your favorite uses.
-
EVERYTHING.
Stained glass
Sun angle/shadow studies
Architectural visualization
Furniture
Art
Vehicles (scifi, aircraft, cars, military)
Random objects
Hopefully someday I can get a RepRap or MakerBot and use it for 3D prototyping as well.
Interior design
FixturesSketchUp does it all for me.
On the other hand, I do not specialize in anything in particular. Whatever the needs of the moment are.

I am currently modeling campuses of two hospitals and a college in my area on my own time, since I was not commissioned for the work. This is just to experience the process of modeling using ground based photographs, where I can get them, Google Earth and Bing bird's eye. My office has work projects on these locations. Needless to say, these are not high precision models.
-
A fair number of people besides myself use SU to produce static models for use in train simulators (the old Microsoft Train Simulator is probably the most common use).

"Sun and shadow study": Solar energy planning.
I recently showed a solar energy company how to find energy hours using geographical features from google earth and date and nearby buildings obstructions etc.
