Is there a plugin or a workflow to reduce material use within 3d printing like

    • inner parts of a solid as honeycomb structure (picture)
    • selective space structures
    • ?

Doesn't your 3D printer software provide this?

On mine I can dictate the internal lattice work form.

I don't have one, which one do you use?
I have used an online print service some times and therefore I have to care about those things on my own (I think?) because I only upload a final STL- or collada-file ...

TIG solved this problem with the plugin honeycomber.
              Thanks again!

Sorry, I never replied to your query. Most printers allow you to dictate the internal structure, whether solid or lattice.

If your print has part that are suspended in air then the print will build an external scaffolding system to allow it to print.

Too bad this only works with Pro version!

Will a donation get a version that works with the free version?

Anyone know of another alternative plugin or a (free) program that will take an skp or stl file and do internal honeycombing or equivalent material usage reduction (I want to 3D print at Shapeways and reduce my materials cost).

                  thanks

Unfortunately Honeycomber uses some pro-only API methods to subtract solids.
You could try OSCoolean Boolean http://sketchucation.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=112055#p112055 - which works on free.
You will need to make a set of smaller solid shapes arranged in a 3d matrix [to form the 'holes'], ensuring that none of them stick through the surface of the original or leave a very thin outer shell - and then subtract those in turn from the original solid [the Outliner might help with these selections ?].
It's more work, but it will do it...
There are also some free suitable 'Shell' tools that will 'hollow-out' a solid - look for those in the Plugins Index...
