I just received a 3d mouse (3DConnexion Space Pilot Pro). I was wondering if anyone else out there had experience with using one of these in SketchUp. Just playing with it, I like it, but it does seem a little clunky. I was wondering if anyone out there who had experience with it had any tips for use or setup.

    Thanks!

      I use this:

      http://gearcrave.frsucrave.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/05/space_explorer_05122008_msp1.jpg

Have used it for many years, the thing is getting used to it, it took me a month to fully get comfortable and since then I always use it, I believe I model 50% faster with this than without it.

I do not know your devise however I have set mine it so that I have all my regular tools set in to the various buttons available.

I think that is in the same product line as the one I have. I just got from a company we are working with, and am really enjoying it, thus far. I can believe that it will make working faster, but I also believe that it will take time to get used to it... it feels pretty awkward using it right now.

        Thanks!

I use a Wacom pen and tablet. I'll never go back to a mouse.

Solo, could you explain why you model faster with it? My understanding is that it helps your orbit and move around the model better, but those are some of the basic strengths of SketchUP. I've never (other than zooming into very small things away from the origin) had trouble with this. The biggest lack, for me, in SketchUP are a lack of good selection (loop, adjacent, etc.) tools -- although this seems to being addressed by plugins.

I could see a 3D mouse being more useful in other modeling/rendering software (3D Max, Revit, Blender, thea...) that focus more on tools than on orbiting.

If I'm wrong, though, I would love to here it.

I look forward to solo's answer, but what I have seen as an advantage is the ability to orbit, zoom, pan, etc, all while using drawing/modifying commands. I believe that many of these commands could also be done via the mouse wheel, but using the 3d mouse seems to make it quicker and prevent a break in workflow... of course, I am still learning, but that is my $.02

Very hard to explain why it is faster until you get used to it and work with it.

I use the explorer with my left hand and a normal mouse with my right hand, together I orbit swivel, pitch and zoom seamlessly while having short cuts at my fingertips, it's just all around smoother and faster to get around, move things and generally model things.

I do not use it for any other app except to fly around Google Earth.

I've always been interested in the use of a tablet for SU. Can you elaborate on how the pen controls work to use the SU functions?

I'd be interested in your thoughts on the use of a Wacom. I tried to get used to the 3D mouse, but in large models it just seemed too slow to react (plus I'm too uncoordinated to use both hands at the same time ๐Ÿ˜† )

@Solo, I have the same one you have too, I love it. I have also started using Cad Control for my iPad, it lets you use multitouch for the orbiting, panning and zooming. It makes your iPad into a giant trackpad. Very cool so far.

I use a Space Navigator. I really struggle to use Sketchup or any 3D modelling program without it these days. One nice benefit is that of you use a number of 3D programs, you have a consistent interface for manipulating views rather than trying to remember all the variations like middle mouse button, right click, ctrl-middle button etc etc that different apps use.

I tried using SketchUp with my Wacom Intuous 4 but I didn't like it as well as using a simple mouse. Then I tried it on the Cintiq 21UX. I still like using the mouse better.

I've got two Space Navigators sitting in their boxes. Tried one for SketchUp but I didn't like switching back and forth between the keyboard and SN with my left hand.

I use Space Pilot pro the, legacy version. I went out of my way to get that type because I like the button arrangement better than on the new one. After using it for a while, I had difficulty modeling without it in any application, so I was kinda' forced to get Space Navigator for out of house work.

For me the main benefit is that you can very quickly see your work from angles that would otherwise be hard to reach. You can also move in 3d space along all the axis simultaneously which is clunky without the 6axis mouse.

I've tried using Wacom and 3d mouse combo and there are also several applications for iPad to use with CadControl and Keypad for GS. But I'm a shortcut monkey and teamed my Space Pilot with Razor Naga mouse (Extra 12 buttons) and with that I can have all my tools at my fingertips (add to it Logitech G510 just to go overboard).

I agree with Solo, you greatly improve your workflow and shorten project duration, but in my opinion the work is also more enjoyable.

I got a space navigator and I love it.

What mode are you using it with? It seems that I am using the "Helicopter mode" although I can't remember why I choose this instead of one of the camera modes.

For those questioning the tablet. For me, it is far superior. You need to use it and give it a chance. I am much faster with it over a mouse now. The pen is far more comfortable than the mouse as your wrist is not twisted. The quick clicks, and customization of the pen, pen buttons and tablet buttons make it far superior to a mouse for graphic applications. I can access so much more control with it quickly over any mouse. I can't imagine going back. If you use photo shop, there is no comparison with the brush tools and sensitivity. You can apply pressure like a real brush, pen, charcoal etc.

If yours is just collecting dust, I'll take it!

Don't get me wrong, I love my Cintiq 21UX and wouldn't trade it. Well, I'd trade it for the new 24" HD version. I still find it easier with SketchUp using the mouse but it's probably due to years of use with it.
