No plugins needed. Except maybe for that tapered curved part: http://www.drawmetal.com/

Not exactly the same spiral but would it be something like this?

There were three plugins involved here:

                1. Made a helix (there are lots of helix or spiral plugins)
                2. Used SketchyFFD (Free Form Deformation) plugin to make the middle "fatter" a bit - this was only to "prove" the concept that the spiral/path can be nicely deformed
                3. Finally used taper maker plugin to do the tapered "follow me". This could also be done in more steps (in the original image, the extrusion seems to be equally fat for a while and only the end tapers visibly)

                taper.skp

                Gai...
