I need a bit of help with something I've not done before, creating a material.

It is a carbon fiber weave.

I took some photos of a scrapped plastic weave tarpaulin, that closely resembles the weave pattern of carbon fiber fabric, which has a flat wide tow pattern. However the tarp was blue and CF is almost jet black. Using a photo editor I changed it to a very dark gray so as to keep the fabric weave visible, but it is still too dark. I also did a little editing to cover a way too visible defect (lower left) and cropped it square.

But the real problem is the variability of the contrast from edge to edge and the result is too much of a checkerboard to be of use. I have no experience in this sort of image editing, so I am at a loss to even out the contrast so it forms a better image on a large flat surface.

I am attaching the SKP of my attempt at making the material/texture. Included are the JPG's of the tarp and my edits to it. Can anybody work some magic on this please???

You need to make the texture 'tileable' so that it's 'seamless' and the edges are not obvious.
There are several tutorials in the web on how to do this with Photoshop or Gimp...
Here's just a few of them

          Hi jgb
I made it kind of tileable -with a lot of repetitions the pattern is too evident -
but it doesn't look like carbon fiber.
There are a lot of already tiled textures if you make a search on google
          http://www.google.es/search?hl=es&rlz=1G1GGLQ_ESES335&=&q=carbon+fiber+map+tileable&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&biw=1408&bih=920
Also you can find one in cgtextures

If you google for "carbon fiber seamless" images you'll find tons of tileable carbon fiber textures.

Thank you Tig, KarinaGM and bjornkn.

That was a very valuable response. From Tig, I now know how to make them, but need to adapt the process to my editor (Photoline32), From Karina and bjornkn I now got lots of textures I can use as well, besides the myriad carbon fiber ones.

I never thought to first Google my need for a texture, but I had no idea of "tiling" so it would have been a shot in the dark if I did.

This is what makes SketchUcation so indispensable to SU users.

There should be a Toolbar Icon to go directly here from within SU, like I can to the Warehouse, in fact I will bring this up in SU9 Wishlist. 💭

                Did It!!!

Attached is my near perfect Carbon Fiber material. Not quite the weave I wanted, but good enough. I may do another weave pattern later on.

I found a JPG of this large format constant contrast weave pattern that was buggered with a watermark and with repetitive line artifacts strewn throughout. Now THAT sort of stuff I know how to edit out, but not the contrast deviations (yet). The color was also off, easy to fix.

In SU I again adjusted the overall color balance, because SU does not seem to follow the Gamma setup of my Photoline32, and the texture map came in way too dark.

Free to all to use! 👍

                Thanks again guys...

Free to use if anyone wants it.
