Deleting .ZIP's?
-
Note: Not sure if this belongs here, in the newbie sub-forum, or over in the plugins sub-forum. If it's in the wrong place, please move this.
I am not very familiar with this sort of thing and thought I'd ask here. I was wondering if it's safe to delete all the .ZIP files from plugins. When I download a .ZIP I download it to "Downloads" on my computer and then unzip to my SketchUp plugins folder. Is the .ZIP in the "Downloads" folder still needed or can I safely delete it without experiencing any problems with my plugins. I'm sure one of you has the answer and would be kind enough to explain it to me. Thanks in advance.

Delete but don't right click and explode

When you have extracted the contents of a zip file into the Plugins folder you no longer need the zip file. You can either delete it or move it into some 'Archive' folder where you store such things to gather dust until you have a clear out!
Remember that if you extract directly into the Plugins folder that you need to keep all of the zip's contents - all files and any subfolders with files in them - in the same relationship; never take files out of a subfolder and put them into Plugins directly, they are where they are for good reasons.
If you were to place the zip on you Desktop chances are you'd use a temporary folder on your Desktop named after the zip to hold the extracted contents [so you know what you've just got out of it] - in that case you should then move the contents of this temporary folder into the Plugins folder, and you can then delete that empty folder left on your Desktop; the zip file is also no longer needed and can be deleted etc as explained before.

Thanks guys! Nice to know I can get rid of some clutter around here.
Rich, I don't get any "explode" option when right clicking my .ZIP's. I can't tell if you were joking or if you were referring to what TIG mentioned about taking stuff out of their folders. Or maybe I'm just missing something.

It depends on your zip/unzip tool/utility - most of them expect the extracted contents to be in the same relationships and you specify the destination folder or a new containing folder [usually default named after the zip itself]; but some others [usually inferior ones] will 'unzip' rather than 'extract' and then they just 'explode' all of the zip's contents, ignoring subfolders etc and then everything is clumped into one big mess! destroying the relationships of the files/subfolders and breaking the script[s] ! Never do that [please! it'll take us all day talking you through fixing it ]

Looks like my attempt at SketchUp humour was lost on both of ye
More likely I was just simply ignored

Alright TIG. That makes sense. I use the default Windows unzipper that came with XP so I should be good, right?
Rich, I thought for a moment that it might have been a joke related to exploding a SketchUp model but then I thought you might be serious. Maybe I still don't get it.
The same concept of deleting .ZIP's in the "Download" folder should apply to material packs that I've already "installed" in Kerkythea, right? Or is that different because I never unzipped the folder there?

Right.
