Well the old 32-bit Windows 7 Professional ended life over the weekend. So now I have a Window 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium computer. The first thing I noticed is the increased Sketchup model save times.

So my question is, does it take longer to save a Sketchup file on a 64-bit machine that a 32-bit? And I am not talking about save time differences in seconds, but save times that are 5 to 10 times longer. Twiddle your thumbs save times now.

I have the Windows 7 Professional 64-bit upgrade disk that I bought for the last computer so I may upgrade to Window 7 Professional later.

I have a new graphic card, and Sketchup models react much quicker with no wire frame display on rotation and also in moving groups there is an improvement speed. I have a new 25" LED monitor, that is a vast improvement over the LCD monitor I had before.

Just wondering about the save times.

It's awful on both x32 and x64 so relax. Hope save times issue will be fixed in v9.

I have not noticed such increase at all. It should not be expected anyhow - SU is a 32bit process anyway.

But that begs the question... does a 32bit exe run slower on a 64bit PC than on a 'comparable' 32bit PC ? Perhaps there are extra loops it must jump through because it is not 'native'... πŸ˜•

Note: I am saving the files on the same external HD, using the USB port. Except on the old computer I was using a USB 1 and the new computer all the USB ports are USB 2. I did not expect this to be happening.

That is what I believe also. On other posts there were complaints of slow save times and I was thinking, hey it is not slow, really it is a reasonable save time. However if their save time is the same as mine right now, then I know what they are complaining about.

Don't believe this is a Sketchup problem.

I've noticed slow save times on my laptop with the save location on an external HDD that's both powered and data linked by the laptop. I presume that's to be expected though.

OK, I have found my problem. I didn't have the hard drive connected by USB 2, I had used the firewire connection, which I though would be faster. So here are my results.

                      1. Firewire, 1m, 3.3 sec to save, original file, original connection that I was complaining about in my first post.

                      2. Another HD using USB 2, same file, 13.3 sec

                      3. The HD in step 1, using USB 2, same file, 14.2 sec.

Note, difference here could be my finger time using the I-Phone stop watch.

So something is not working correctly on my Firewire connection. Finding this problem will give me something to do later today to try and find the problem.

Anyway thanks to all for your response.
