i never get any feed back from anyone in this forum and i was reading the posts and i came across yours. believe me when i say that i do understand your frustration. every thing i've learned, i learned with no help from anyone; it's not that i didn't want help...it's just that no one ''would'' help me.i finally gave up asking for help and decided that if i was going to learn this, i was on my own. i've spent several months staying awake into the wee hours trying to learn as much as i can in su8 and it has been very stressful at times but i'm doing it now, no thanks to this stinking forum. my email is stonepainter@att.net and i'll help you if i can or i can at least tell you what i know. bruce
Duude..get real! You only have two posts in this forum(in your first one u asked for help and you've been nicely answered).
I wonder how did you suddenly come to the idea that no one will help you if u didn't even asked for help? If u really can read you will see the 80% of the posts are questions and requests for help(and almost all of them got answered).
On the other half ,this guy has asked for help(here in this forum) and you didn't bother to answer him, instead you want him in your yard(maybe to have some rewards on this matter).
It's annoying how some comes here and start to spread bad words out of nothing but a bad heart.
Have a second thought and be kind! -
Serpentine5 , try to give the links for the video u re talking, maybe attach the sketchup file of your boards .
For a better manipulation when moving things try to use down ,right and left arrow keys on your keyboard(they will lock your moving direction ) .

Also see if your component is not glued to any surface.(check that on right click on your selected component and see if the unglue button is highlighted,if it is just click on it)
Another thing will be for you to mark(with construction lines or with line tool after measuring the distances u need) the spot where a corner of the other board will come, then with move tool pick the board exactly from that corner and move it on that mark .

I call bullshit on that statement! Anyone who looks around a little would see that there are many folks who bend over backwards to help others learn to use SketchUp. Looking at your two posts, I can't see any evidence that you've been asking for help. We can't read your mind to know you want help. You have to ask.
Mike, in hopes of giving you at least a little bit of help, here's a few things that may help. First, if you are moving components, make sure you grab them at logical points, If you want a corner on the component you are moving to correspond to a corner on another part, grab that corner. Another thing that I teach is to draw the parts in situ from the get go. This helps you avoid some of the moving. I know there are tutorials out there that show you how to draw the parts as if they are laid out on the bench and then move them together to assemble the piece of furniture. This is a lot of work and opens up possibilities for errors. My process is to draw parts that define the footprint of the piece and then draw the parts that fit in between. I don't draw joinery until after I've got the thing modeled because there may be changes to dimensions and although the changes can be made with the joinery in place, it's easier not to deal with it.
Although I didn't do these videos specifically to be tutorials, they might help you out a bit. A fern stand and Thomas Jefferson's book stand.

what is it that you need to know? i design furniture with su8 and i haven't been using sketch up for a real long time but i do know how to create a board to size and move it and place it. i never get any feed back from anyone in this forum and i was reading the posts and i came across yours. believe me when i say that i do understand your frustration. every thing i've learned, i learned with no help from anyone; it's not that i didn't want help...it's just that no one ''would'' help me.i finally gave up asking for help and decided that if i was going to learn this, i was on my own. i've spent several months staying awake into the wee hours trying to learn as much as i can in su8 and it has been very stressful at times but i'm doing it now, no thanks to this stinking forum. my email is [removed] and i'll help you if i can or i can at least tell you what i know. bruce

I removed your email from your post in case spammers get a hold of it. Think before your type
If anyone want to contact Bruce(stoneplanet777) I'd advise PM'ing to sort out contact arrangements.

Can't find the thread, but look for Cabinet Sense here somewhere. It's a great way to build cabinets with Sketchup. It'll give you all the cutlists you need.

..........it will not snap into place like all the videos I have watched do. It intersects the side and passes through or it wants to align in another position than what I want. I am not sure how to make these pieces "snap" together. .........
Too lazy to read all the posts. Did you get your answer? If not, when you create a cabinet panel as a component, select glue to "any". Then when you insert or move a component it will snap to another.

Thanks for the replies. After I made my post last night I found the Sketchup For Dummies videos on boobtube. After watching about 2 hours of video I learned the trick of grabbing the board by the corner and mating it with the corner you want it to touch to get perfect alignment. On parts that dont have a corner, I learned to use the measuring tape to make a mark and then match the corner to the mark.
I was able to get my cabinet together. I need to figure out my doors now, but I have it completed.
I am not sure if this is the place, but I would like to upload it here to get opinions of the way I did it. Not of the construction itself, but of the way I used sketchup.
Let me know if I can do that here.
Also, what is "situ"? -
You can indeed upload your models here and I'm sure a number of folks would be happy to take a look and offer constructive suggestions.
"in situ" means in place. If you looked at the videos I liked to, you'll see that I use that method when I draw furniture. In the case of the fern stand, after drawing the leg component, copying it and placing the copies every other part is draw in situ using the parts that are already drawn as references. As I said, this helps to reduce errors. It also eliminates the need to know a lot of dimensions ahead of time. Again, using the fern stand example, after the legs are in place, the aprons need to be drawn to fit. Beyond that, I don't really care how long they are until I'm ready to make the cutlist and then I have SketchUp tell me how long they are.
If you don't follow that method but rather draw the parts separately, you will need to know or figure out all of the dimensions of every part. This is more time consuming and more prone to errors.

I will have to try everything in place my next time round, but this time, I already had everything on paper, and I wanted to do this to find and correct any measurement errors i had, which I did find some and was able to correct them... Now all I need to do is go to the store and buy all the materials I need and get to work. I didnt find any hinge or knob tools so I just put the doors in place and made a knob on the door before copying it.
Tell me what you all think of it, and how I could have done it better and or easier.
Thanks -
This link also has a good step by step tut on building abed side table http://www.srww.com
One thing that came to mind is make sure you have snapping turned off, this maybe a contributor to problems depending on how you are handling inferencing -
Overall your model looks pretty good. I didn't check it in real detail but it's not bad.
As to hinges and knobs, you can likely find those on the 3D Warehouse. Open Window>Components and where you see the word Google, search for 'hinge' or 'knob.'

After I saved the cabinet file last night, I closed out SU, and today I opened it to make a few attempted modifications, but when i told it to open the file, it tells me that the file is locked by another user and asks if I would like to open it in read only format.... How do I open it back up where I can have full control of it? and why is it doing this? is this because I didnt "log" into google and sign it?
-
The message results from control of your model by another application or user. Are you sure that you closed SU? Look at your start bar to see if there is another instance of SU open. If none, and you are on a network, someone else may have the model open. If not, perhaps rebooting may help.
If you answer yes to the message, and open to read only the model, you can "still as" any modifications you make to it by changing its name.
-
No one else on my network... no other SK was opened. it may have stayed open in the processes... rebooted and it opened fine.
Thanks -
A reboot! - that usually works...
If it doesn't [which rarely happens - just now and again] there are free tools - 'unlock[er]' - that will force the system to release the file that's messed up - although sometimes it might require a restart anyway...
Be wary as many 'unlock[er]' related downloads are loaded with Malware - but this one seems OK http://emcosoftware.com/products/unlock-it/download.php
