To upgrade or not to upgrade? ... That is the question
-
Why not use both? There are no issues running v8 and v7.1 in the one OS.

I have upgraded. I believe its well worth the price, but agree that you should keep v7 around for a while. This is not just an incremental upgrade, and some operations work quite differently in v8. You may find that working in v7 is more intiutive until you learn the new ways.
As an example, I had a frustrating time with the Google Earth imports, until I learned the new way of working. That's been the big change for me, but the new way is much more productive for me. Most of the plugins I use (Didier Bur's pointscloud, and others like Pipe along path, Weld, AS's Webconsole, Thom_Thoms Cleanup) either work ok or have ben fixed recently.
-
I would also recommend upgrading and sure, why not just install the new version and try it out yourself? There is no risk, keep the current version, too (I have versions 6, 7 and 8 installed and finely running even together).
When I first installed v. 8, I simply copied all my plugins to the new plugin folder and (luckily) have not found any issues. I do not know about V-ray but the renderers I have worked even this way (copying the plugins).

There are some plugins that needed updating for SU8, but most worked out of the box and most have been updated already. The biggest problem is that due to a bug in SU8 the plugins that use a specific method for raytracing doesn't work - so for instance my Raytracer plugin doesn't work reliable. This issue has been reported to Google and hopefully we'll see a fix soon.

Thanks for your input... I think I will take the plunge then....
I'll keep my version of 7 alive as well just in case... and will keep an eye on the bug thread in case anything goes wrong...
Next stop... sketchup 8...

I've just been upgraded by the IT dept
Sorry needed to share it

I don't have a list of that. There are so many out there and I don't use them all. I just observed that some, very few, needed an update.

So i have upgraded and am busy moving plugins across to skp 8 a few at a time to check for any incompatability.
One of the new features in skp8 is the ability to restore a saved toolbar layout right?
Then why can it not restore the toolbar positions (saved from a previous instance of the program) which have been scrambled after moving a few more plugins across and reopening?
Does this feature actually work?

Yea - that is an issue that still lingers. Adding/removing plugins still mess things up.

I have the new vray, and i am using sketchup 7 pro, on a Mac OS and i have a problem.
Vray doesn't render big models, with materials created with vray material editor. Small models, example objects taken from Warehouse, it doesn't have any complain. But a previously created big model, with lots of groups and materials, it starts to process, and after a few minutes it stops. It doesn't even open the framebuffer. It just stays still, and then nothing happens.
I've tried debugging methods form vray, and still nothing.thank you
