HelpMeDraw: A curved twisted rope
-
Hey SketchUp geeks
I'm need to create a curved twisted rope. I know how to do a straight 3 held rope(google it), and i know how to do a curved cylinder.
But the combination of those two things, man thats hart.
I hope you can help me.

Make your straight one and use ShapeBender or Fredoscale

or better component Stringer

-
Quickest way is to find the helix.rb script - that will quickly make a helix shape,
The select the edges and use another tool like TubeAlongPath.rb to extrude a circualr profile [keep the number of segments sensible as this'll all multiply up and kill your processor...]
You now have one spiral 'thread' of the rope.
Select it and use Rotate.Ctrl to make apolar array 360 degrees, immediately type /xxx where xxx is the number of threads in the rope - perhaps 12 - you can keep trying different ones until it looks right.
The threads are repeated twisted around the vertical axis...If you want a non-straight rope bend it with Fredo's tools ShapeBender or Scale or use something like Chris Fullmer's ComponentStringer.rb could do it - where you make a small piece if helix threads and copy it along a 3D path...

Thanks for the answers, but I have it difficult to follow your guides. Where do i get Chris Fullmer's ComponentStringer and helix.rb scrip.
If you could draw it or maybee more precise
thanks

Hi toke,
One of the best tutorials on ropes I have ever seen is that Of Taff Goch here:

A plug named on the title subject is always on the first post of the thread

So Component Stringer is here

Some helix plugs are here; (you have right to use the search engine of the forum

(up top right page) -

Hi Take,
If you really want to modelthe rope, you will easily find yourself with an extremely large model that is (almost) impossible to work with. Would a solution to do it with only the rope texturebe okay?
