Has anyone had issues with large files retaining the file size even after groups and layers are deleted? Is there any type of memory of groups or layers that is kept even after deletion. On a more general note what is the best way to keep file sizes down? Are there any scripts out there that allow you to delete redundant geomentry (sel duplicate in rhino, overkill in autocad)?

    Thanks,

    Branden

I just asked this question on the woodworking forum yesterday, and the consensus was that textures made from high-res files are usually the culprit, not complex geometry. It was true in my case; I had downloaded a wood texture which increased my file size 10 fold.

Copying everything into a brand-new file is one way, as Martin suggested, yes.
PURGE ALL Ruby script by TIG (free) is an alternative.
"It Purges all UNUSED Components, Layers, Materials, Styles. Choose which type(s) to purge from the dialog (Yes/No)."

Alsi in Model info > Staistics, you can "Purge all" (layers, styles, materials, components) in one step. Layers themselves are not too byte hungry but all the other three can boost your file size pretty easily if you don't pay attention.
