I am working on a really large model at the moment and it is becoming very slow. I would like to know if it is possible to export an object from the large model for example a reception counter to a new file so that I can add dimensions and text and if I make any changes to the object then it will automatically be updated in the large model.

          Hi David and welcome!

If you create a component (which is practically a SketchUp file) of some geometry within your model, you can right click > Save as (...a separate skp file).

Now you can work on this file separately by simply opening it then when finished save it, go back to your original model, right click on the component again > Reload. A file browser window pops up, navigate to your file and open it.

Edit; I moved your topic out of the wish list to the main SU Discussion forum.

Gaius and David M, sorry, my answer seems to be a little offtopic. I imagine something like Autocad Xref`s. We should have SU Xrefs or .... we have??? 😲

There is an Xref manager plugin by TIG (afaik) but haven't ever used it so I cannot comment on that.

I have worked for many years in the simulation industry and worked with MultiGen Creator. This 3D modeling tool had a very nice option called “Isolate select”. If you are working on a complex model or scenery and having difficulty with speed or parts that are blocking your view when going around it than this option is very useful.

Just select the part you need to work on and type “I” and a new workspace opens, it is also possible to switch between the two workspaces.
