@pbacot said: I'm against the move for city commissions to require proprietary software for submittals, especially if it requires a "service" or the SW is not free. I understand this for larger cities, state school programs etc., but being "different" (Mac-user), it goes against my sense of fair play and free market. Anyway, some of these smaller cities get the idea to require AutoCAD files etc. and they are not really able to utilize the files. On the other hand, the more they require, the more work for us, hopefully billable. Well put and exactly my point. In the interest of fair play I think any city model should be so devised that a model for import can can be made in a bunch of universal formats and then converted easily for import. I also feel strongly that any town or city model should be available in a format useable by the public / designer to determine and test structures to the same level they will be assessed in this environment!!

Chris, im not particularly technically minded but i dont think youll be able to call it up for web dialogs from SU, as SU always uses IE (on windows) and safari (on macs) to ensure that the user will always have that browser. You never know though, those ruby magicians have been known to do stranger things...

Update. It appears that, at least for now, Silo is not as stable under Vista than is desirable. Some people have been complaining about this on the Silo forum. I too, have thus far experienced a couple of crashes. Shame, but it won't stop me from continueing to use it. At the very least, it's proven to be a very good bevelling solution. Precise and fast, just what I needed in that regard. Workflow: build comp in SU export as .obj import into Silo select and bevel edges (loop select - love it) -save as .3ds import into SU and run 'remove unused edges' (that a ruby? not sure) Cut up and copy comp to keep poly's down if possible. Done.

AT the end of last year I had the ATi Radeon HD2600 512MB in my machine for about two weeks. It was really slow with SU, even more so than the ATi Radeon 9800 Pro 128MB I had in my old machine. So I got rid of it really quickly (donated it to someone that could use / appreciate it) and got me something better, which was the ATi Radeon X1950GT 512MB, much more powerful than the HD2600. After the X1950 I got the nVidia 8800 GTX 768MB and now have a nVidia FX3500 256MB in my machine.

Juju, I uninstalled it. The only thing the trial version would let me do is play with a sample image provided with the software. It appears the only way to try it with your own images is to pay the $15. I don't have that many blurry images to worry about it. Perhaps Ken will post some samples for us to see.

FWIW, I ended up uninstalling the nVidia driver and then, after hooking the monitor up via the DVI cable, I reinstalled it. Evidently the card can't handle resolution settings as high as the monitor will.

Thanks Chris, In looking through these charts, such as the one at: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/windowsvista/editions/choose.mspx It looks like Home Premium does not allow Remote Desktop access. We use Remote Desktop a lot, because it lets us use 2 or 3 computers at the same time - all from a single keyboard and mouse. (We display the remote computers on a second monitor, which has worked very well for us.) Unfortunately, if I purchase the computer with Home Premium, I cannot easily upgrade it to Business - I have to go all the way to Ultimate. At least according to this site: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/get/anytime-upgrade-overview.aspx

Im a Logitech fan as well and run an almost identical setup to Jim. I use a VX revolution for the lappy and a MX revolution for the desktop. They both run of their own USB dongles without any conflict. The MX is fantastic.....cordless and with its own battery recharger!

@djohnson.nz said: Just to let you know I have resolved this issue by the age old method of experimentation. It turned out to be in the anti alias setting in the openGL capabilities window. I went through the four options (see screenshot) and the problem persisted until I got to the first on the list (no.16), on selecting this choice the problem went away. I have updated the driver as well and so far have encountered no further issues. will keep my fingers crossed. Just as an aside I am new to groups, although I have set up a profile with a photo it doesnt show up. whats up with that. Thanks for your help... Good to know you have it sorted out. If I were you I'd contact the administrator or a moderator regarding problems with your profile picture not showing.
