spell check %$#^&* (invisible)
I just wanted to point out that layer 0 acts different than all other layers once signed to a group or a component if you unchecked it the item do not go invisible. in my mind that is another reason to keep all geometry on "0" (active layer "0")
Thanks

RE: Layers protect from items in '0 layer'?
I believe that if the original geometry is on layer "0" and then grouped and put on a new layer that all works but if each layer is original geometry sketchup's stickiness will cause you issues. That is if I am reading you right.
I am attaching a little rule card that I share with a lot of folk.
remember that layer "0" is different than all layers once a geometry is grouped or a component and put on a new layer if you turn off layer 0 the item dose not go inadvisable this is the only one that is like that.
Please if I am off track some one may be able to enlighten the area better.
I also atached a file that I use to enplane layer ect

RE: Component does not show up in list of components
make it is a .skp not a .skb backup
or expand the components window and drag it to the right file

Use Dynamic option window.

Double click on a face then hold shift and click on the face. Or to be sure to get a deselect hold shift + ctrl (work well for offset)

RE: Dynamic Rafter Tails
dose the scroll/fret work remain constant?
So I have made a few Dynamic Components I look at other and then use the math in them to help me with what I want it to do.- the Tail stays the same and the rafter end is scaled.if the end of the tail's angle changes then look into the hide and use different tips with the roof pitch.
Hope this helps.

RE: Turning lines into area/solids
Make faces (http://rhin.crai.archi.fr/rld/plugin_details.php?id=236)
Just remeber that line work in CAD can have many lines that do not make faces -

Not sure this plug-in will work for you but take a look.

RE: Is there a way to access the 'Volume" of the 'Element Info'?
If it is a group or component and a solid the info pallet will return volume.

RE: Layer assignment of entities within components
Generally no layer 0 is 1 different than other layers; once you make the geometry a group or component on a new layer if you turn off the layer 0 off the component is still visible this is the only one that works this way. So if you get that geometry on a different layer it will not work this way. It can be madding if you don't trust me I know.

RE: Kitchen Plans in Sketchup/Layout
As Tig said layers on components and groups keep the geometry on layer "0"; as well sections could help.
