would importing it thatn moving my axis make any difference? or is moving the axis only a visual representation?

So by unchecking that box, my model will not come into real world coordinates correct?

RE: Help with Roof
Jean,
I took the file you posted and put all my SU stuff on layer 0 and deleted all the other layers to see if it would help, it seems to have made that "flickering" go away. But how would it work if in the future I want to bring in a DEM file to show the ground surface of the site, seeing how it is no longer in the correct position?
Did I do something wrong when I imported it into SU?

RE: Help with Roof
Hello all,
Thanks for the replies.
To start, I did notice that flickering stuff going on but I just assumed it was a graphics card issue.
Second, the original file is imported from a dwg where it is drawn in units. So 1 unit = 1 foot. So therefore .667 units = 8 inches (thickness of walls). I tried to change the units in SU but just got odd results when trying to pull my walls up, 8' looked more like 20'. Do I just need to scale up the whole thing??
Third, when I imported the dwg it came in in its current location, so im not sure what to do about that. In my dwg its in real coordinates so I figured it was in SU too.
Thanks guys, going to have a look at some of the attachments now. Forgive me for my "newbness"

Help with Roof
Hello again,
Attached is a model of a site I am working on. I have created roofs for two of the buildings (using a ruby I found on this site) I just cant seem to get a roof for the two buildings that connect (called out in file) Can someone please help me figure this out, this is my first major modeling attempt.
Thank you

RE: Modeling using .dwg file
Cool, I had that box checked I just wanted to make sure thats what it did.
Thanks

RE: Modeling using .dwg file
Thanks for all the replies. I am beginning to get the hang of SU now. I was able to do it by just tracing one of the lines and it makes all the connected lines a face, but I will try out that script next time.
Another question? When a .dwg is imported is it placed in the same coordinates that it was in ACAD in SU. im asking cause we draw using real world coordinates and would eventually like to show my models in the real world.
Thank you

RE: Modeling using .dwg file
If the exterior wall in my dwg (above image) is all one connected polyline, shouldnt it come in as a face in SU.. It comes in as individual lines, how do I make it a face?
EDIT: I think I got it, It seems that I have to trace atleast one line in order for SU to recognize the face. is this how it is done or Im I missing something???

RE: Modeling using .dwg file
The attached image is what I have done in ACAD. It is a 2D floor plan basically of a water campus. I would like to import this into SU and model it. How would I go about doing that?

Modeling using .dwg file
I am trying to import a dwg file and use it to model but am running into problems...
after importing my file (which is a plan view of a site) I figure i should just use it as reference and recreate the lines. is this correct?? If I do this it is hard to redraw arcs as SU brings in the arcs as multiple line segments. So I thought I would group the dwg first than try that way, well this didnt work either as everytime I draw a line over one of the lines it doesnt draw anything.
So what would be the easiest way to model using a dwg file??

RE: Thinking of career change
Thank you both for the replies.
My thinking was to getting into maybe somekind of interior design firm or something that does renderings often. i know learning will be a long proccess but what better learning is there than on the job. I learned more about Autocad through work than I ever did in school.
In my line of work i deal with water and sewer stuff (i.e. Lift stations, well site, booster pump stations and so on) i guess I can take an existing project of ours and do it in SU and present it to the boss and maybe he will fit it into the budget for future projects.
I never thought of it that way, this whole time I was taking SU and modeling house when I could actually model something that I use on a daily basis. Hmm....see thats why I love forums, so many inputs that you see things you missed in the beginning. I got the perfect project for this too. will post my progress
Thank you,
any and all advice is appreciated.

Thinking of career change
Hello all
I am wondering how would one go about looking for firms that use SU and other 3D programs. I am thinking about changing careers and would like to get into 3D design. I am efficient in AutoCad, as I use it on a daily basis, but am kinda get tired of just drawing 2D plan and profiles (Civil Field). Any advice on how I can get into the field would be great.
Thank you

RE: Window Trouble
Eventually I would like to try rendering it, so in the mean time I will just make the faces that are to be seen white and as I get the model looking better I will post it and get opinions on it.
Thanks for the replies

RE: Window Trouble
Thats what I was thinking about doing (select all) just wasnt sure if that wast the right way to go. So when I Push/Pull a wall up the two sides of the wall (interior and exterior) should be white, and the face showing the thickness should be blue correct??
How does SU know what to shade what?? is there a setting or do you just have to keep an eye out for it and adjust as you go??
-
RE: Window Trouble
Thanks for the tuts, its starting to make sense to me know.
As far as the color of faces go...the outside walls should be blue and everything inside the house white??? If so how do i make that happen..right now evrything is blue
-
RE: Window Trouble
Awesome...one question though, what exactly does clicking the wall and intersecting it with model do?
Also why is it that my walls are a blue shade and when I insert a component or creat a new face it is white??/ What does that mean?
-
Window Trouble
How do I go about placing a window on my model and actually having it to where you can see through it and not just placed on the face of the wall??

RE: Learning to model
I am farily new to 3d modeling, dabbled with it in school. My main platform is Autocad, in which my 3D exerience has been with. I kinda have a grasp on the modeling but still alot of learning to do. I am currently modeling a house that I just decided to trace after not finding a cad file.
I will post in gallery as it becomes recognizable, too see what everyone thinks.

RE: [Tutorial > Modeling] How a Pro Builds a House in SU pt 1
Ive seen the second part of the tut which I am going to get to in a bit. I am just wondering why we would repeat a process we already did when we can just copy it??? Im confused on how many "copies" of the floor plan are needed...

RE: [Tutorial > Modeling] How a Pro Builds a House in SU pt 1
Does step 11 mean just copy it over 4 times?? this being after we trace over the walls and the door/window openings??
