Ah OK I believe that exist a plug that select with the mouse like the "eraser method" maybe by TIG or WHAAT.... maybe this can help you

Thanks for all the responses. Jakob's eraser and space key works perfectly! Thanks so much for the great tip! Even better if we can have bigger eraser for bigger area selection in future.
