    • Fredo extensions startup errors

I have had Fredospline licensed and working fine for some time. Curviloft recently requested to be licensed. I followed my nose and came to the page to purchase it individually or as part of the 2022 bundle with some other hopefully useful extensions. Happy to support Fredo by spending a little extra, even if I don't use all these.

I got the licenses and went through sketchucation to install. Now I get errors from each of the extensions on startup. I've restarted sketchup, the whole machine, etc.

The errors from Curviloft and Fredospline don't seem to keep them from still working.

      I've got LibFredo6_v12.7a.rbz installed.

I used the sketchucation store plugin to install. There was some dialog about choosing a directory and I remember one being in /users and the other in /program files and I told it program files.
this may be a factor, but I'm not sure.

Some help with this is greatly appreciated. I just want to use sketchup with the fredo extensions and not pick around through install issues.

      Sketchup is 2022. windows 10.

      Thanks

    • Merging / combining Fredo splines

Is is possible to combine multiple fredo-splines. I want to join them at their endpoints, then have the two original splines behave as a single spline that can be edited/adjusted going forward.

I redrew all the splines and all the splines now loft together. For clarity what I did was a Swap curves on each spline going from bezier nurbs to global fitspline.

So is Fspline fredo spline? Not sure what you mean by speedy redraw. And I assume you had the problem until you did the redraw.

Also FYI, the file I uploaded to you has a lot of hidden deleted junk in it, including a very large mesh that I used to help position the splines. The splines themselves were created with fredo spline bezier nurbs. They were created in individual files that had images of templates scaled and then the spline drawn, then copied to a parent of the file that I uploaded. I have know way of knowing what I might have done that is causing this. The splines do have little hooks at the end that represents part of the template. Ultimately I want to edit these out.

When I got through carefully and painstakingly placing the splines in the model, I attempted to do the curviloft run, just to see what I would get. That showed the problem we are dealing with here. I still have a lot more adjusting to and additional splines to create, and probably a lot of trial with the different curviloft options until I get the accurate model that I'm seeking.

You can find more info on what I'm building here that I'm wanting an accurate sketchup model of: https://www.sancristobalboatworks.com

      Thanks for your help.

here are splines that I'm having trouble with. See if you can get them to work.

    • RE: Is there limit to number of splines Curviloft can use

by process of elimination I was able to determine that spline #16 above was causing some type of problem. If I did say #15,#16,#17 together it would loft. But add more and it would fail to produce a lofted mesh. I don't get any obvious indication why. I edited #16 and removed some complexity and then I could loft more. But still not the whole. Some of the other splines still have some of the same feature/complexity that #16 had.

Is there any information about the limits, what curviloft needs, or logs or something. I'm new to this and not sure where to dig for answers. I still have lots of adjusting of the splines, as well as additional ones to create to get to my final required geometry. the ones in the current example are the primary splines and were created from scaled images of templates that were taken from the actual physical hull mould.

I need to stay on focus, and not chase rabbits. I badly need an accurate model of my hull shape so I can design against it with sketchup.

any help here is greatly appreciated.

    • Is there limit to number of splines Curviloft can use

I've created some 19 splines with fredospline using bezier nurbs. when i try to loft those splines with curviloft it will only do 4 at a time. So I have sections of lofted surface.

If I do more than than I get the splines numbered, but can not get it to complete the surfacing. I'm selecting the green check, etc. Screenshot 2021-04-07 143325.pngScreenshot 2021-04-07 143922.png

    • RE: Prevent inferencing to other geometry with fredospline

Yep, was playing around with this more on a blank slate. a lot easier to figure out if your not deep in some geometric mess. I did note that the smoove must be toggled on first before a move, so you are either smooving or moving the more local part of the spline. Inferencing can be toggled on/off during the move. more visual indication of the status would still be nice. Thanks for the quick response.

    • RE: Prevent inferencing to other geometry with fredospline

Both of these suggestions certainly help.

Is there a way to turn off inferencing, turn on smoove, but lock to an axis all at once?
It seems as I try to press the shift key it messes up the other settings. Also it appears that the smoove toggle will highlight the spline vectors somehow, but that is the only indication it is "on". Some indication in the status that shows the mode you are in (I believe sketchup native tools do this sometimes) would really help. As would some extra buttons in the tool panel to set these things on/off in a more permanent manner.

I have played around with the different spline types and I'm still a little confused about the trade offs between them. I also have questions about the spline type will affect the surfaces to be generated by curviloft.

I am trying to create a model of an actual physical shape. In this case it is a hull of a classic lines rowing skiff, for which I have real tooling (a hull mold), but no digital model. I want to achieve a highly accurate (relative to the real physical thing) model. I have done a photogrametry study and produced a mesh (over 1M triangles) that is overall accurate enough to trace with some splines, and with some final adjustments against real physical measurements should get me a model that I can design accessories, fixtures, etc against. I want to digitally produce (by cnc/3d printing) masters for those parts that can then be surfaced to produce molds for production in composite material (carbon fibre, etc.)

I have chosen to make the investment of time/$ in Sketchup. There are lots of shop and planning things it is certainly well suited for. For boat design it is clearly reaching beyond its normal domain. But I don't need to do load/stabilty calculation, etc. I need good fair organic surfaces, that I can design more good fair organic shapes against.

There is discussion here about joining of organic surfaces: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-uniform_rational_B-spline#Continuity.

Any advise that can be given on what types of splines, suitabilty of curviloft or other extensions for this, settings to consider, etc is greatly appreciated.

    • Prevent inferencing to other geometry with fredospline

I have a mesh that was imported. The mesh has a face that bisects it. I want to create a spline on the face, using the mesh as a guide. I have turned on 3 point plane, etc. I can get the tool to inference the face (plane), but if I get too close or in the mesh the tool wants to inference to the mesh geometry. I have tried hiding the mesh and then showing hidden objects but it still wants to inference. I don't want the spline to attach to the mesh, but i want draw the spline very near or through it on the face, using the mesh as a visual guide. Seems like there should be some way to prevent inferencing to geometry that is visible.

    • RE: Fredospline pause not working

Seems to be working now. Not my imagination it was not before. Bizarre.
I did not try to recreate the workflow I was doing exactly. It involves a large mesh (1M triangles) and creating splines at intersecting faces. sketchup and computer seems stressed with this. When I get back on it for real, If I have a problem, will let you know.

      Thanks for the fast response.

    • Fredospline pause not working

      fredospline 2.0a, libefredo 11.6a, sketchup 2021pro, win 10.

when creating a global spline, the tab key does not pause.

seems clear from instructor and from documentation under flow-management that it should do this.

I was hoping this would let me stop creation and reposition my model.
