I drew this "Asian-Inspired Stool" after seeing the one that Alan Turner built and displayed in the Fine WoodWorking Web Site. You might say that I was "inspired" to try my hand at drawing it in SketchUp. The multiple angles on the legs gave me a few hours of challenge in order to get them right. The SketchUp model is uploaded into the 3D Warehouse in the collection named "Creekside Woodshop" as well as my web site "CreeksideWoodshop.Com" along with the renderings. Ron

RE: How to simulate a carving in wood w/ SketchUp
Thanks for your help. Here's what I was able to accomplish using V shapes and follow-me tool. It ended up looking exactly like the original antique that I was reproducing.

RE: New Woodworking models uploaded
Thanks all for your comments, they are well appreciated. Hazza, I never thought of the term “surface vs. complete modelers”, but you are correct. When I first started to use SketchUp I was a surface modeler and was happy just to be able to draw and view something in 3D vs 2D. Now I find more value in using a complete 3D drawing to build furniture from than a 2D drawing. I don’t draw anything in 2D anymore.

Thanks, all of my models are built using components and drawn in detail and the same as if you were working with wood in the shop. The only thing missing is the sawdust.

How to simulate a carving in wood w/ SketchUp
I have a simple wood carving that I want to replicate in SketchUp and I’m looking for thoughts or examples on how best to accomplish it. The attached pattern is what I would use as an overlay on an actual piece of wood and then do a simple carving along the lines with a V-gouge, no more than 1/8” deep. Thanks for your help. Ron

New Woodworking models uploaded
In the interest of sharing, I have recently uploaded many of my drawings into the 3D Warehouse in the collection named "Creekside Woodshop". I have also updated my web site "CreeksideWoodshop.Com" with the same drawings as well as several renderings for each of the drawings. Here's an example of a Secretary Desk that I built several years ago and just got around to drawing it in SketchUp. Ron

RE: Free CD's of Popular Woodworking magazine
I agree about seeing a list of drawings that have been submitted but not posted yet. It would certainly save spending several hours of duplicated drawing. Fella77 - I did my rendering in Kerkythea.

Here is the Shaker Tresle Table that I submitted today.

RE: Free CD's of Popular Woodworking magazine
Well, here are 2 that I just did and sent in yesterday. Neither were on the woodworking SketchUp Collection but maybe these are already submitted as well. I've just started working on a 3 drawing now.

RE: New Tool Cabinet Design
Peweuk, thanks for your kind comments. I really can't say for sure how long it took me to arrive at the final SketchUp model. The 1st draft really only took me 2 to 3 hours, but then I spent maybe 2 to 3 more changing and tweaking the drawing to arrive at the design that I was satisfied with. As for the render, all of the setup was done in SketchUp. I used a 2 sided room & floor and added 2 or 3 lights above the cabinet to get the lighting that I wanted. The SU model was then exported into Kerkythea with out change. Ron

RE: New Tool Cabinet Design
Here's a long over due update on the cabinet construction. I finished building the cabinet and sent it off to my son to finish it when he has time. I believe he's planning on finishing it with just a polyurthaine. The construction notes, photos and final SketchUp model is available on my website http://www.creeksidewoodshop.com/Toot-Cabinet-2/CSWS-Tool-Cabinet-2.htm. Ron

RE: New Tool Cabinet Design
At this point I'm not sure if I'll paint it or just leave it natural wood with a poly finish. Ron

New Tool Cabinet Design
Here's a drawing of a tool cabinet that is on my to do list for this winter. My original drawing had only drawers and no cabinet but after thinking about it for a few days I modified the drawing by removing 4 drawers and adding a cabinet with shelves. I'll keep you posted on the finished project. Ron
