RE: Residential Exterior
I used to have to deal with all that stuff. Now I just draw pretty pictures for the people who deal with all that stuff. I don't miss it.

RE: Photo realistic fly around
More like days to run on my machine which is not weak by any count.
I actually had some help from an other with a souped up machine run the render. I am still developing a process to allow me to do these nice quality, smooth movies, in a reasonable amount of time. Some hardware improvements coupled with a smarter process and I will be doing these efficiently. The time is coming soon.

All those windows! (They are practically outlawing windows in some climate zones in California)
Is that because of energy use concerns? Seems like with good quality widows and strategic overhangs and tree plantings one could still be fairly energy conservative. We do not have the population density of the left coast so I suppose we do not feel the energy crunch as much. Something like 4 humans, .25 dogs and 20 cows per sq, mile in these parts.

Photo realistic fly around
This is a video made using my sketchup model with the new prowalker IRAY plug in.
Next time I will make it in two parts and change the sun to shine on the front for the first part and the rear on the second part.

Residential Exterior
Been a while.
Here is a somewhat current project. It is now built, I will have to see about getting some pics.

Licence issue (solved)
I was using sketchup on my laptop. It sits right next to my desktop pc.
I exited sketchup on my lap top, waited a minute and went to open sketchup on my desktop pc.
I have done this a zillion times in the past.
This time it says my licence is still in use and wont let me open sketchup.
I have restarted both machines and tried again. no luck.
I can still open sketchup on the laptop, but it wont let me shut that down and open sketchup on my pc.
I have a 1 seat network licence. It is current.
2017 pro
windows 10ant Ideas?
p
I went ahead and opened a sketchup file on my laptop and did a save and then closed the session...waited a minute and tried the other pc again and it worked this time...
I don't know..maybe the sketchup licence checking dohicky was down temporarily this morning.

RE: How fast can you model a project in sketchup
Happy boss....?
oxymoron if you ask me...and I am my boss so I should know. -
RE: Interior Render Experiment
Sorry to be a wet blanket, but I am not a fan of the styles you presented.
The modeling is good and detailed nicely, but in my opinion the style lets the model down. The overlay and semi photo real rendering leave me in a limbo between what it would really look like and an artistic impression of what it would look like. As a viewer, I can't really tell what your after.
I would think a client would be a little confused too.
Seems to me you need to go harder towards non photo real, or go fully photo real.

.HELLO,
As a Structural Standing Seam panel, Vertical Seam delivers a clean, linear elegance paired with unmatched quality for a dependable, long-lasting, and beautiful roof. Structural Standing Seam roof systems are ideal for lower sloping and longer spanning roofs, or where extreme temperature variations exist. Is this an ad for metal roofs?

One has to have his own properly organized library of frequently used components, materials etc. That would surely cut the modeling time.
you.
That above quote is huge factor.
Also, do not believe everything you read on youtube. People lie to themselves all the time about how long things take them.
I have been freelance Modeling as a full time business (residential homes) for the past 8 years and as an employee for many years before that and I can tell you that time is relative.
If you are trying to come up with an amount of time it will take to complete a project in order to sell your services you will need to be very methodical about breaking down what it is you are doing, assign an amount of time you think it will take, and if you get the job, try to meet those goals but don't sweat it if it takes you longer at first.
Just like digging into new software, there is a learning curve to knowing how to bid a job. You may end up making less than you should from time to time, but in the end that is part of the learning process.
As I mentioned above, the library of parts and materials is key. Do not get lazy and be in such a hurry that you do not take the time to properly model parts you know you will use again and get them stored where you can easily retrieve them next time you need them....I need to listen to my own advice on this because I still find myself trying to remember that one project six months ago were I modeled just the thing I need at this moment and I spend 20 minutes opening models looking for it....
Patient, smart modeling first, and speed will come.

RE: DISPLAY ADVICE
[Keep in mind, that SU currently supports a Windows DPI scaling only up to 150% sothat 4K displays do lead to a tiny user interface sothat e.g. icons get small or the web-based dialogs may need to zoom/scroll etc.[/quote]
Question 1. Do you actually use a 4k yourself? If so, could you send a screen shot of how the dialogs look?
Question 2. Wondering if i run two displays, one old school, one 4k, would i be able to drag my tool pallets/dialogs onto the old screen and have them display properly.
Question 3. Any Idea when sketchup will support 4k displays?
Thanks for chiming in

DISPLAY ADVICE
I have also posted this question on the podium forum because that is my rendering application, but thought it wise to seek advice here as well in that I spend all day every day spinning models around in sketchup 2017pro
So, it is time for new displays.
I have read & read & read about pros and cons on 4k vs non 4k and I am no closer to knowing what to get.
-
Primary purpose = sketchup large files and supodium rendering and creating videos from large image sets - plus podium walker iray
*windows 10
*ct500bx100ssd1 hard drive -
my graphics card
- 24" to 27" size display in th $500 us range
If someone out there has some first hand experience with 4k monitors I would appreciate some direction.
Thanks
