You can click any faces like the bottom face after the top face (not shown here)
for have same result than the Sand Box!

For other surfaces take the last bottom icon on the right! πŸ€“
Intersect the result with the model

Thanks that is a very usefull tool, but is it also possible to project onto a complete curved random surface such as this? I cant seem to do that

You could use Extrude Edges By Vector To Object by TIG to project line on surface along any vector and erase faces in new group.

Thanks, I will try that out...it looks a bit complicated at first glance

I was hoping that there is a simple "drape to group" tool.....

I am using landscaping surface levels onto which I want to drape a line, which I want to use for a new extrusion path for a solid shape. I thought that if the drape tool generates a line which follows a surface it should be relatively easy to add this to a group in the ruby code. But once its generated its too late..and I cant code.....

    • Drape line onto surface as a group?

Who knows if it is possible to drape a line onto a surface as a new separate group?
Is there a plugin that can do this? or am I missing something with the standard tools.
The standard drape tool drapes the line onto the surface but then it becomes part of it
I would like to select the draped line and pick it up from the surface, but then I would need to select each line segment.

Thanks guys....(are there no girls on this forum....?)

    • RE: Bevel irregular shapes

      Hi Dave,
Thanks, that would be great if the breakwater would be symmetrical but that is often not the case. (In my example it is) Normally on the outside there is heavier grade rock or concrete units while on the lee side its lighter rock and thinner layers.

Also there are most times different profiles along the breakwater. I am looking for a quick way to create a 180 degree revolution from a face.

      Regards
      Michiel

    • RE: Bevel irregular shapes

      Thanks very much Pilou.
I downloaded profile builder and its an amazing tool, I am going to buy it

Breakwaters are normally build up of several rock layers, first a core layer of smaller stone, than one or more under layers of larger stones and then a heavy armour layer. I have now used the assembly builder for the different layers to follow a path and I get my breakwater with all volumes for each of the different layers, absolutely fantastic!

Just one more thing, do you maybe know of a clever way or plugin that allows the end-face(s) to revolve 180 degrees in on itself? Breakwaters always end in a round head as attached, I always struggle to get this done manually for each separate layer. Ideally I would like the generated volume to merge with the original.

      Thanks for your help
      Michiel

End faces for different layers would need to revolve 180 degrees

    • Bevel irregular shapes

I am working a lot with Sketchup for civil engineering applications and I find the solid tools extremely useful to calculate volumes. A problem I keep having is drawing the toe structure of a breakwater (if there is one) because this varies with the seabed.

Is there a tool which can take a irregular solid and cut off the toe-line to a variable angle? (I have attached a screen shot, its difficult to explain)

I am using Fredo6 roundcorner, (bevel tools) but it appears I can only draw 45 degrees angles. And also I don't see if it is possible to take the bottom and only work upwards.

Thanks but that is also what I tried, it also does not work

Even drawing a box or rectangle without making it a component or group cannot be painted

Are you saying that you have no materials showing as painted in the file at all? In this case it may be you've set the face style to "monochrome" and you need to set it to "shaded with textures".

and in fact, your screenshot leads me to think this as well.

That's cool the way it is indicated in SU for Windows. (Another fail on the Mac though)

O my goodness thank you so much , you guys are awsome
What a silly mistake to make, I am staring myself blind and the solution is right in front of me!!!

      Edit a selected group/component-instance.
If its selected faces have ANY material assigned, then they will NOT accept the container's applied material...

If faces that are nested within a group/component have no material assigned them, then they will display with the "container's" assigned material...

Thanks very much, but if I draw a separate box or rectangle within the same project then I am also unable to apply paint to the area. How is that possible then?

You don't see this in many instances in your ouput, whether LayOut, rendering, graphic image file or print. And Dave's idea is the best. Hide the elements, which you don't need in the long view anyway, by turning off their layer.

I agree, that's the best I have come across and I applied it. Just hope Trimble will come up with a better solution because its not very professional I think. Nevertheless even with the quirks there is no better alternative ....... πŸ’š

I'm curious how far you are zooming out. Or how you are hiding your edges.
The top of this is only 1mm thick and as you see I have flipped one so you see the bottom.

Thanks for your help and suggestion!, my apology for the slow response
With the same project I have another problem and also uploaded the (part) model

For now I have "solved" it by putting relevant groups entities in layers so I can disable them for certain views,

    • Unable to apply paint

I have a very strange problem which is either a setting I don't know about or a bug
My project consists of a lot of nested components sitting on top of each other
I am unable to apply paint to any component or group.
Although the colour I try to apply does show up in the entity info.

Also when I draw separately a simple box or area I cant even apply paint to that.

I have attached the sketchup file (version 2018)

I would appreciate your help on this!

      Kind regards
      Michiel

      Thanks
I am disappointed there no real solution but workarounds, that's very frustrating...I was hoping it was a setting somewhere. I don't want to make changes to dimensions and adjust thickness, as that's not very satisfactory. When I start drawing dimensions in layout its just incorrect. I tried hiding the edges as you advised, it does help but it still shines through when you zoom out further.

    • Components shining through?

I am trying to draw a barge with angle irons and beams welded onto a steel plate shell
Somehow the angle irons welded on the inside seem to be "shining through" the shell
Especially when I zoom out it becomes very appear-ant.
But when I zoom in closer the "shine through" disappears again

Also under some viewpoints it shows more than others
I don't really understand what is going on, who can help?

I am using Sketchup Pro 2018

Slight shine through of angle irons through on the top only (but not the side)

Zoomed out completely, all angle irons are showing on the outside?

An alternative to the right click, Save as... thing is to open the destination folder in the secondary pane of the Compnonents window. Set the top one to In Model. Then drag the components from In Model to the secondary pane. If you are making a bunch of components that all belong in the same collection, i.e. windows or door knobs, and you are making them in the same SketchUp file, you can open the Details menu in the Components window and choose Save as a local collection and make the library in one swell foop.

Another small thing that's driving me nuts

I am trying to make a couple of component libraries
Why are some components when you click "save as" into the designated folder updating their thumbnails and others not? Sometimes I like to change the viewpoint and update the component to see this back in the thumbnail.

I just cant figure this one out!

Does the extension require that something be selected before you start it? If so, select that kind of entity in the model and the search for the menu item in Shortcuts.

The same thing would apply to creating shortcuts for native Context menu items.

Does anybody know how to assign a shortcut to an extension if it not shows up under Window/Preferences/Shortcuts/Function ? (Pro-2016) All Sketchup functions and a lot of extensions are showing up, but not all and certainly not the one I like to assign. 😠
