if I remember well, the width and heigth of your frames must be multiplies of 4: this means that the codec can compress a 800 x 600 PX video, but not a 807 x 603 one. Some codecs require a multiply of 8.
I'd use a DVX or Xvid codec: they allow you fast compression and good quality.

In what format reimport your file from Wings3D ❓
Seems only 3DS can be possible 😒
But this format has some limitation (65 535 limits by facts polys...)

yes, 3ds format keeps well the textures too. Sometimes I succeeded to import an obj file, with the apposite ruby: it allows you to keep square coplanar faces, instead triangular ones. But it is still a buggy plugin.

For me 65 535 polys are more than enough to be handled by sketchup. I prefer not to exceed 1/4 of that limit to keep my workflow fluid and smooth, and even keep working on my laptop. Or share it with other people.
But this depends on the goal you pursue. I prefer to have a small load and run faster and believe that a good texture + 4 poly is better than a bad texture + 100 polys: there is a sort of beauty in keeping the poly count as low as you can.

    • RE: Is there a free plugin like smustards subdivide and smooth?

honestly, I like all the features of the subdivision and smooth ruby, except the fact that it multiplies the poly count by exponential factor.

Apart some easy models, this kills sketchup.

I prefer to create a simple shape in sketchup and edit it further with Wings 3D. It's more than a plugin, it's a real subdivision modeler, with a lot of features and handles very well hi-poly objects. It has a decent uv-mapping tool too, to edit your textures.

After you've finished with it, you can always re-export your model to sketchup and render it with your favourite style, or render it with almost any renderer you want.

If you want to give it a try, here the link: http://www.wings3d.com/

    • RE: Section exporting 2D EPS problems!!!

Did you use the internal pdf export function of sketchup, or do you use some external pdf creator?
I have encountered some problems too when used pdf export function of sketchup.

If I remeber well, archicad installs a virtual printer to save file as pdf. You may try to "print"
it as pdf, instead as exporting it. If it doesn't work, try some other pdf creator, there are some free programs too. I personally work well with cute pdf.

      but beware!
If you print it as pdf, the standard sketchup's output is a bitmap image saved as pdf. This means, you are not able to edit the edges as vector entities.
If you want to export the lines as vectors you have to chek the use high accuracy HLR option in the print preview panel.
This allows you to preserve the line thickness too, but you can't export faces, texture and shadows, only the lines. You will be able to edit the lines in illustrator, but you have to redraw the surfaces and fillings.
The result is precise and you shall not loose parts of your drawing; moreover, you can watch the preview, before saving it as pdf.

    • RE: Exported Images - Textures Distorted

Now I remember I encountered the some problem about 2 years ago when exporting some hi-res images for print. It happened that some surfaces come out triangulated, with a wrong oriented texture.

I believe it was a memory problem. There is a resolution limit, when exporting a picture, that depends from the amount of your memory. When you reach this limit, sketchup is not more able to export an image.
My opinion/experience is that when you get near to this limit, the output may be somehow weird.

A workaround I've found was to move slightly the camera and retry to export the image. Sometimes it worked. Other times a "broken" face come out good, but some other face was weird.

In most cases I had either to reduce the resolution of the image output, or edit it in photoshop to correct such strange output.

Which format did you use to export it?
You have to see what settings are available when you export a model.

I had a similar problem when I exported a building to vue d'esprit as 3ds object.
I've learned that the best settings for what I need are these shown below.

Then check if you are able to configure how you export your model (it depends from the format chosen).

      hi bobu,

the OBJImporter.rb plugin doesn't work always well with such models (besides that it takes a long time to convert the model)

I'd suggest to use Wings 3d, which is opensource and free to make the conversion. It has always worked well for me.

    • RE: OBJ import error, help!

      bobu,

what is the scale of your model? How big is it?
When you import a model from another program you can import meters instead millimeters if you don't specify it. The result is a mesh reduced to a lilliputian scale.
Sketchup is not able to close tiny polygons with a face.

I believe the problem here is about the polygonal structure. The faces of your model seem to be quadrangular. The obj format supports quadrangular faces with non-coplanar edges, while Sketchup requires coplanar edges to close a face. Then, where the edges are not coplanar, a face is not created.

You can try to triangulate your model before exporting it, or export it as 3ds model and it will be automatically triangulated.

Sadly, this increases the number of polygons of your model, at least by two: your cpu and gpu will not like this.

Let me knoe if that helps you.

    • RE: Ideas in CAD

Sorry for my poor english, but I don't know another word for it: vitality

This is the real difference between pencil and computer aided drawings.
When i draw with a pencil, body and mind (brain, spirit) are one single thing, work together. There's no bezier curve that can emulate a hand drawn line. Computer drawing is more an intellectual act, an act of the mind olny. Maybe with the exception of tablet input devices, there's not any real good interface between human and calculator. Computers can fasten your work, but can't bring alive your work.

Otherwise, how do you explain the plethora of attempts to make your computer drawings more "natural", from the edge styles of sketchup to the watercolor tutorials for photoshop masters: just look at the "how to make it watercolor like" threads that there are only in this forum.

No it's not the some as real watercolor. The fragrance of the paper, the graininess/texture of the paper, the imperfections that make it unique, the real colors: a printer gamut is usually very limited: you can never obtain deep blues, decent purples, blilliant greens. Even the rgb gamut of the best screens is something limited.
The some applies to all "natural" mediums, not only watercolor.

You can draw some masterpieces with your computer, but up to me they lack in vitality. It's many years that I try to achieve a vital result with computer, but it looks like the holy graal quest.

I wish I had more time to draw without computer.

      snobbishly yours

      OPEN LIST
feel free to edit and complete it

      Pencil pros:

      • doesn't need power supply
      • no batteries
      • cheap to buy
      • few maintenance
      • the weight is ludicrous and you can carry it everywhere without backpack or case
      • no boot or startup time required, no reboot!!
      • no software updates, no patches, no malware
      • no snobbish win vs mac vs linux: it really just works

      Pencil cons:

      • doesn't work well in the darkness
      • you can not copy and paste
      • if you want to email a sketch, first you have to scan or take a picture of it
      • no undo! (well, I remember the age when I had to erase ink lines with a blade)
      • color fills and patterns are not so quick and easy to generate.
      • ink color choice reduced if compared with a computer screen. Drawing in truecolor by hand kills the rendering time of your organic hardware.
      • most of carbon units cannot easily generate shadows neither produce a decent perspective or even figure out how it works: the best trained units take a lot of time to operate such functions

Tablet pros and cons: just reverse the above list.

Future evolutions, not so far to come: oled diplays look very promising.
Take a look to MS Surface:

With this tool I could make my joypad (a cheap and easy one) work well with Sketchup.

The left thumbstick is setted to emulate mouse directions. Jou can easy adjust speed and acceleration.
The right thumbstick works as mousewheel.
All 8 buttons were set as l-click, r-click, m-click, space bar, canc, line tool, extrude tool, eraser and move.

It's just awesome! And I haven't yet tried a wireless device.

      bad topic - dangerous field!

if you are ready to execute by yourself a death sentence and kill somebody you've never seen before, then capital punishment may have some sense for you

but, if you're unable to do so, how can you allow someone else to do it in your name?

it's like eating flesh or vegetables: have you ever killed a cow or a lamb puppy? a pig?
if not, how can you eat them?
If I had to kill my meat by myself, I would eat many more vegetables.
I'm not completely vegetarian an I never killed my lunch. I'm not coherent or perfect.
I'm not here to judge what you eat

But it's good to think and share your thoughts.
