When you export a model, it is exactly the size it was created (subject to the accuracy of floating point math). It is the program that reads the dxf, that sets the dimensional unit, it is then edited with.

Ok, so the inches-setting in 'option' is not important... - so do you know why the file is not an accurate 1:100 when I open it as such (through 'place' in Illustrator) ?? It seems crazy that I should have to manually double check and rescale it?

    • Change unit in export option

      Hi there
I want to export my SU file to Illustrator. But if I make a dxf file, and then open it in scale 1:100, it's not in precise scale.
I've discovered that I have an export option when I choose the dxf format. When I choose that, it's in inches, but my model is in mm.
      Maybe that's the problem?
I can't see how I change that unit, though, can anybody help me?
All tips for a succesful export/import SU -> illustrator will be much appreciated, actually!

      Thank you very much

    • RE: Panic - my measures have changed

      Hi again 😄
Since it's cold and we all stay inside close to the fire, maybe you (or somebody else) can give an answer to another measure-problem:
I want to export my SU to illustrator. But when I export to dxf and click 'option', my export options are in inches. I want them i mm. Where can I change this?
Hopefully this will solve my export-problem - when I open my dxf file in Illustrator it's not 1:100 but something close..... Which we all know is pretty nerve wrecking....

Any ideas about this? Or other ways to go about it?
I want Illustrator to make my 2D furniture nicer, put color on and generally make the plan more beautiful, but as I said, it's been a while since my last SU visit, so maybe I should spend some hours getting to know SU Layout in stead?

      Thanks again for your time!

      Hi TIG
      Thanks for your answers!
I haven't had the problem again, so I don't now what happened 😕
Maybe it was my own mistake, it's been awhile. Though I can't see what I did...

Anyway, I changed prefs to your suggestions - and have a question about this
      @tig said:

... if you have ',' as a decimal separator instead of '.'

where do I change that?? -Actually it's annoying that I have to use shift every time I make a forced rectangle...

    • RE: Where's the bug?

      Hi Gai
Thanks so much for your time!! -Just for the record, I KNOW the file looks like.... you know. But I am not paid to look at anything else but the rooms I'm working on (the client says, when in fact we all know, that you can't work on just a part of a drawing if there's an overall problem 😞
Anyway, I closed the gap you found, but it didn't solve the problem. (I attaceh the new file) What I want is for the walls to be coloured and the rooms paper-white. I think maybe the bug is on the opposite site of the plan?
Wouldn't it be great if SU could point out the problem?

    • Where's the bug?

I've gotten some bad CAD material from a client, and have been forced to redraw the whole thing. I'm almost done - but while I was working on some details, something has happened, and the outer wall is no longer a closed line. I can't fine the problem - is there a way to 'ask' SU for this (I'm on PRO 7, but haven't used it for years, and the combination 'rustiness' and 'no time' is really nerve wrecking 😞

I upload the file so you can see what I mean.
      Thanks for any ideas, Lene

    • Panic - my measures have changed

I'm having a nervous breakdown over my sketchUp (Pro 7). I've put in carefully measured squares (with are laboratory stations for my clients). But this morning as I wish to continue my work, the measures have changed into mysterious 2000.8 mm x 1449,3 mm f.ex instead of 2000x800 which I typed. This is true for all my squares. I haven't done so much yet, but am afraid to move on before I know what caused the misere 😞
Any ideas? I'm SO short of time, any ideas will be welcomed....
      Txs, Lene
PS I attach the file if that's useful, maybe I have something on that shouldn't be...?

      Hi Anssi - or others.
It's been a while - but still have the same problem. I'm also an administrator on my office iMac. Then why can't I be allowed to insert my license number??
I really hope for some help, since I have a big project this week...

    • Export SU to Illustrator

Hi - like to save my SketchUp (7 Pro) files in.dgw and open them in Illustrator, to make nice looking 2D presentations (i'm an interior designer specialized in office interiors). I find this the best way to place the furniture etc, and then I use SU for 3D examples in my presentation.
But when I open the files, they are always in 1000 pieces, an arc will be divided i a lot of small segments etc.
What can I do to avoid this?

      Thanks - Lene

    • Can't insert license in SU7 pro

I have just upgraded from 6 to 7.
On my regular computer it works like a charm, but on my workstation in office I can't (both macs). I downloaded the trial version, but when I go to the 'license' it is grey, and I can't touch it.
When I restart SU it only asks about the template, not if I want to add a license.

How do I go about this?
      Thanks in advance, lene

    • RE: SU 6.0 latest version?

Just to let anybody interested with the same problem know, it turned out I had to pay for an upgrade from 6 to 7. (totally reasonable, old license was 6 years old, and I paid 82 euros to update).
      Have a nice day.

    • SU 6.0 latest version?

I bought SU Pro about 6 years ago - and love it! For the last 3 years I've been working for a studio that uses MicroStation. But now I'm starting my own company and want to go back to SU:

My question is this - my SU tells me, when searching the web for updates - that it's the latest version. It says SketchUp 6.0 (6.4.245) when I click 'about SU'.
But on your site I see a version 7 available...
      Why is this?

    • RE: Which CAD program?

      Dear all
A few weeks passed, I quit my job, finished maternity leave, and am now ready for the reality of it all.
And then I remembered the post I made, and thought I'd just check if anybody had answered...
I'm overwhelmed, thanks to everybody who took time to give me their opinion, post links etc.
For now I think my plan is to continue with SU + Illustrator/InDesign, and maybe look into a rendering program (or SU plug in?) -I don't know if I dare ask for recommandations? (Dont want to start another Mac/PC battle 😄
I was quite hit by the 'who cares how you get there' advice. I know my things look good and easy to understand when I present it, so I'll keep my head up high and continue with SU.
(That said, I've written down all the software proposed in this tread, and I'll give every one a quick glance to see if I missed something.)

Thanks again for your time and wished for the future - we'll just have to hope, that the smart people who says to me that 'recession is exactly the right time to start a company' are right.....
      😄
      Best regards to you all,
      Lene

    • Which CAD program?

      Hi there!
I’m about to start my own company, and am checking the market for optimal CAD program.
I started out 5 years ago with SketchUp Pro, which I bought and loved.
The recent years I’ve been working in an office that use PC and MicroStation, but I’m a whole hearted Mac person, so I’m looking for a program for Mac.
In short my work is space design for companies. I look at the space available, give advice on how to use it in the best way, with regards for knowledge sharing, etc.
A normal job would include me getting dwg files of the space; moving same walls, maybe putting in a kitchenette, etc. Never any real housebuilding.
I then do the interior decorating in 2D, make sure there’s enough room for everybody working there etc.
For the presentation I show the overall view in 2D, some details in 3D, and then reference photos of the furniture etc. This I do in InDesign.
My question is: I’m looking at ArchiCad as my first choice. But – I can’t seem to get an answer from anybody outside the SketchUp forum when I ask why SketchUp is not enough? It’s a program that I’ve already paid for, and that I know and love. ArchiCad is SO expensive, and I cant figure out if I really get my moneys worth.
My feeling is that it’s some kind of snobbish anti-SU attitude, often from people who haven’t even tried it. But still I have to be taken seriously with my costumers.
Does anybody out there do a job as I’ve described it, using only SketchUp? What can the other CAD programs offer extra?
Is there anything that I should be aware of?
      My clients normally use AutoCad.
I hope to hear from you – best regards lene
