    • SU-->CAD-->SU Advice and Best Practices

      Hello again!

I am sloshing back into the murky depths of the best software CAD package that best integrates with SketchUp. I have investigated a few through the years (DoubleCAD, TurboCAD...) and I wonder if anyone else has some suggestions on how best to take a 3D, layered SU model to a CAD package for detailing, hopefully with round-trip integration back to SU.

I realize that the best integration is Layout, but wondering if there is any other solutions or workflows that experts are using.

A promising workflow with landscape design in Land F/X and wonder if anything is close for an architecture?

Thank you all for any advice!

      Cheers,
      Eric

    • RE: Sections to 2D with layers

Truly looks like a gamechanger. I would love to develop a SketchUp model and have the ability to export a 2D section cut that retained it's original layer names (i.e. "Wall", "Floor", "Window", "Lightsaber"- you know, the usual ๐Ÿ˜„

Really looking towards the further development of tools like this and the weaning off of other products to finish the documentation process. Unfortunately, my work is expedited through CAD at the moment. Hope to be able to use LayOut more effectively in the future along with these sorts of plugins.

      Thanks for the response, Skalp!

I think the next phases of Layout are key, and I agree with you, I would love to not have to use another piece of software than SU/LO, but for the time being, 3D is incredibly easy and efficient in SU and 2D documentation is easier (for me) in CAD.

Thank you for your workflow, I will also give this a go.

PS- I hope to break free from this vicious cycle using Nick Sonder's working method (BTW- thanks for the inspiration from another architect, Nick!)

Awesome! I will give that a shot. I am also wondering if the new Skalp plugin has the same functionality. Thank you!

    • RE: Sections to 2D with layers

I should tell you my working methodology so far (albeit a little broken) for plan views only.

-Model in SketchUp with layers (Walls, Doors, Windows, Site, etc)
-Add Section at desired floor height
      -Create Group from Slice
      -Isolate Selection of new slice
      -Camera>Parallel Projection>Top View
-Export 3D dwg (NOT 2D dwg)
      -Open in CAD, Explode Group
-Match Properties of Walls, Windows, Doors of appropriate CAD layers

This is not as time consuming as it sounds and goes fairly quickly, but as I said, this only really works for plan views. Elevations and anything with dimension loses it's layers when you have to export as a 2D dwg.

Any guidance on workflow would be much appreciated. Oh, and yes, I am working toward using Layout more and more.

    • Sections to 2D with layers

      Hello!

I have been searching the forums for anyone else who has a similar SU>2D CAD workflow.

I am trying to take a section view/group that has the ability to retain the SU layering. I know that it is possible to export a SU 3D dwg that retains it's layers, but does anyone know if there is a plugin or method to get a 2D view out of SU and into CAD with a minimal amount of workaround?

      Thank you!
