Another good tip when modeling symmetrical things.
The automatical grouping thing would still be handy for all other forms though.

      Thanks for the reply. appreciated.

      Thanks Jeff for that reply.
I share the exact same need.

It should be great if Whaat would incorporate a function like that for the 'organic modeling' module he is elaborating.

Thanks by the way for that 'right to left' selection method. I didn't know that and it sounds quite useful.

      Cheers,

    • RE: Make Human - poser style 3d character modeller

I was thinking.....Can the 'joint-push pull' tool be used to extrude a part of the body and thus creating clothing?
I mean for instance, 'joint extrude' the torso to make a sweater etcetera....

the only thing that bothers me that it is dificult to select the needed parts for that. (That's why I posed the question on intersecting and getting groups automatically, in the how-to section)

      By the way,
These images were made with Sketchup (+render engine) + Makehuman, which I find a super piece of software. This humanmaker is in my top 5 list of 'easy to use' software.

    • How to intersect and have the cut geometry as groups?

      Hi all,

It's something that bothers me since long time.
sometimes when trying to cut an organic form in half by intersecting it with e.g a plane, selecting the geometry by hand is a tedious job.

I would love it if the interesection would automatically generate groups.
(for instance two halves of an apple as seperate groups).

Is this possible in some way? Maybe some ruby exists for it?

Thanks in advance, your help is appreciated.

      Regards,

      Nice one Frolfer.
The noise for me personally is not a hassle....as I know any unbiased engine has problems in that department, this is one of the more clean images.

      Nice materials as well.

    • RE: Old scene rendered in Artlantis 2

Indeed those shadows on the second image look nice.

My question: is Artlantis worth the money?
I mean, 900 euro. Photorealism seems possible with artlantis, but more difficult to achieve than other (cheaper) packages.
What is your opinion on this Scott?

    • RE: Lighting Plugin for Sketchup

That video is a very nice 'proof of concept'.
      Great coding Adam !
The background 360Β° is definitely cool as well.
Is it a 'equirectangular'(lat/long) image or a 'sky probe' image?

The ambient occlusion render method seems really fast and on a textured model the effect is not bad at all.
(still hoping though to have other render engines behind it in a later phase πŸ˜‰ )

      Keep up the great stuff!

      Fred,
Some of the organic stuff can also be achieved by using 'displacement maps' which (some) SU render engines support.

      A quick try out:
the skin doesn't have any thickness in sketchup, but by assigning a black and white displacement image it suddenly gains 3D:

The mono surfaced ('smooved') mesh in Sketchup:

      The displacement map used:

It makes it worth doing renders.

    • RE: Reasons....

      Adding a second view.
I used a 'displacement map'(= a bump map that actually changes the 3D geometry of the object when rendering) for the pavement and wall tiling:
