    • RE: Is it possible to import models with texture into Sketchup?

      Hi Gaius,

I used Tig's import plugin, but my model came in all black in sketchup. It seems like the texture was not located. But I did not get any error message saying .mtl is missing or something.

The .mtl is on the same location as the obj. Should i create a folder for the textures?

ThomThom: .3ds format is a good option and it works. But the thing is I cannot export a Maya model into .3ds, but only obj.

      Thanks for your help guys,

    • Is it possible to import models with texture into Sketchup?

      Hi guys,

Would anyone know if there is a way to import models from other programs such as Maya or Max with their textures?

I exported some models from Maya as obj with the texture files and imported the obj into Sketchup. I tried Whaat's UV Tools (import UV's from Obj), but it did not work. Maybe I did not do the right thing pr maybe the plugin was meant for model made in Sketchup and exported as obj to other programs.

Any suggestions on how to do it would be much appreciated.

Thank you and have a great day!

1001bit has a vertex select and move plugin - http://www.1001bit.com/products/move_vertex.shtml, although it could be achieved with the standard move tool.

      Awesome. Thanks, Adam!

    • Selecting faces, vertices and edges

I would like to have a an option to be able to select only faces, only edges or only vertices. For example, let's use a simple cube. I just want to select all its 12 edges without the faces. What I do now is selecting everything, then hold down Shift and click on the faces one by one to remove them from the selection. Imagine the model has hundreds of faces, that will be time consuming. I want to be able to do it by just two clicks, like right click on the model (or click on a plugin) then chose "select edges (or faces) only".

This option of selecting faces and edges will be very useful when used with the Line2tubes tool.

UV Texture - I don't know if anyone has mentioned about UV yet. But that would be awesome to be able to UV texture the model the way Maya or Max does.

How about the "Point Merger Tool" by BTM?[/quote]

      Hi Gaieus,

Yes, that's the idea. But it is still very hard to control what to merge. I wish I can select which points to merge. I guess the merger will work better only when Sketchup allows us to select vertices.

      Thanks for the link, though.

Selecting vertices and merging them. Right now Sketchup allows us to select only one vertex. I would love to be able to select as many as needed to move, rotate, or merge. For example, if two vertices are 10 m apart, selecting them and clicking on the merging tool will merge them at the middle point (5m); or slecting many vetices and merging them to a point/center of the group.

Just hold your left mouse button after you first clicked and drag it around to establish the axis of rotation (there is no need for different planes and such).
Then release, grab the model anywhere and Rotate. Every gizmo I have used so far is so much clumsier than this.

Thanks, Gaieus. I guess I just have to practice and get used to it, and hope that a gizmo for rotation will be available in the future.

Rotation gizmo - It would be nice to be able to rotate each object using a gizmo (or whatever it is called) like in other programs such as Maya or Max. It would be faster and more efficient than the current rotation method where we need a plane/surface. Having a bounding box similar to the scale function in Sketchup for rotation would help. Thanks.
