    • Animation of Sketchup Model

I saw no where to search for previous posts on this topic so I apologize if it's been discussed before...I am trying to animate a walk thru of a crime scene model. The exported animation needs to be seen in court on a large TV monitor and it needs to be clear. I have exported an animation at 1280 x 853, 15 fps, H.264 compression. I am on a Mac running SU 8. The animation at this size looks mediocre at full screen. I would expect on a large monitor it will look much worse. Bumping up the frame rate should solve the jittery motion but is there a way to get a high resolution animation?

      Thanks for any suggestions.

    • Deleting image texture

I'm probably missing something obvious but is there a way to delete an image used as a texture without deleting the face it is applied to? I'm using jpeg images to texture exterior walls. If the image doesn't work the way I want and needs to be reworked in PS, I can't find a way to remove only the image texture. When I select and delete it I lose the entire face of the wall as well.

      Help is appreciated.

    • RE: KERKYTHEA 2008 ECHO EDITION HAS BEEN RELEASED

I dl'ed Kerkythea and like notareal I got the unix executable files. I then saw this thread and went to the Kerkythea forums. I could not find anything about X11 but did end up finding an article on Apples website telling me I could install X11 from my Tiger install DVD. I wanted to install it on the drive where OS X is installed but I got a message saying I would have to change my settings so I chose a different drive to install on and did a custom install for X11. Now when I click to launch X11 nothing happens. When I click to launch Kerkythea nothing happens.

I feel stupid asking but could someone tell me the best way to install X11 so that I don't screw up my existing OS.

    • RE: Exporting 2d graphic

      Paul,

I got some of your explanation and some not so much, but, bottom line I followed your suggestions, turning anti-aliasing off for the export, bumped up the pixel count to 1500 and exported a jpeg from an SU model. I made adjustments in the image size dialog box ( the resulting file was gigantimongous ) and clicked the print button using print with preview even though the preview image was pixelated almost beyond recognition. To be honest because of that I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised to see the printed results of my 40" image...well half of my 40" image. It was beautiful! Many thanks to you!

As for tiling or not tiling...Kinko's is a great option for black and white output and I do use them, but add just a little color and the cost becomes prohibitive. So until I win the lottery and can afford a large format printer I'm stuck with printing in sections and fitting them back together.

      Thanks again for your help.

    • RE: Exporting 2d graphic

      Gaieus and Paul,

Thanks for your patience and input. The image sizes I need vary but I often make poster size presentation boards (32 x 40) by tiling images printed in sections on 13 x 19 inch paper. After re-reading your posts I went back and exported a TIFF image from a model at 1000 ppi. just to see what would happen. When I opened the resulting image in PS it was 75 inches long with a ppi of 72. I then printed the image using print with preview and adjusted the size back down to 14 inches and got a good print. I still don't understand why the document size settings in SU's export options window appear to have no effect on the resulting image. And this is going to take a lot of experimenting to find a method for printing images in sections.

Paul if you can provide a process that works for you it would be greatly appreciated. I'm far from a PS expert but I have used the program for a long time and have manipulated and printed thousands of images and have never had this much trouble getting the result I needed.

Hmmm....It opened for me, though slowly. Perhaps the file size is larger than it should be?

    • My first SU model

This is my first SU model. It's very much function over form. Not anything like some of the really nice stuff I see here. But it's my first one and so I thought what the heck. It's simple but it illustrates exactly what I needed it to. I tried to gve it some color, suppose to be almost black, but when printed it I lost all the detail. The spring tensioned money clips were a challenge but after a lot of trial and error I'm pretty happy with the result.

    • RE: Exporting 2d graphic

Sorry for the dpi/ppi screwup. Regardless of the terminology I need an export that doesn't look like a watercolor left in the rain when printed. The problem I am having is it doesn't matter what information I tell SU to use for the export. I have tried exporting the same image multiple times and set the export options to several different sizes and resolutions. None of those exports, when opened in PS were any where close to the size (height and width in inches) I wanted and all of them were 72 ppi.

If I tell SU to export a jpeg, make it 5 x 7 inches with a ppi of 200, shouldn't I get an image that when opened in photoshop or any other imaging software is 5 x 7 inches with a resolution of 200 ppi? Or am I still not getting it. What is the point of putting any information in the SU export options dialog box if the image I'm going to get is never the size I want and is always 72 ppi. An image at that resolution is useless to me.

    • Exporting 2d graphic

I have tried multiple times to export a 2d graphic image from a model I have done in sketchup and the results are not very good. I click on the options button, set the size and resolution and click the export button. When I open the image in photoshop it is neither the size nor resolution I had it set to. It is always 72 dpi and about 24 inches long. It seems like a pretty straight forward process but am I doing something wrong?

    • RE: Material application?

I have attempted to change the direction of a "wood" material I applied to orient the grain as it should be. When I right click on the face I do not get any option to select like "texture/position". I am on a Mac. Surely there must be a way to do this on a Mac. Anyone?

I figured out my mistake. You have to explode the component first. Then when you right click on a selected face an option for changing the orientation of the texture is available.

Thanks for the help Modelhead and James. I am also on a Mac so I'll have to investigate your comments about saving the altered material further.

    • Material application?

Is there a way to control the direction in which a material is applied to a face? For example, when using a wood grain material, is there a way to control the direction the material goes on so that the grain runs in the appropriate direction, ie. grain running vertically on sides of a bookcase and horizontally on the shelves? I suppose I could build the component, the explode it and rotate the faces all in the same direction, apply the material and then put the pieces back together but I was wondering if there might not be an easier way.

      Thanks for any help.

It happens on any thread containing an .skp file attachment. All I am doing is left clicking on the attached file. It downloads immediately...but as a .php file.

Not to beat a dead horse but you said you wanted info...I just down loaded a couple of files from the Google pro forum and they downloaded just fine as skp files. I don't know why but it seems the download issue may be at your end.

    • RE: Downloads

To the best of my knowledge it's not saving the webpage. It's just saving the file with a .php extension and warning me before downloading that this is an application file. I download anyway and change the file extension to .skp and the file icon changes to a SketchUp file icon and opens perfectly in SU. I've been using Mac's for a long time and if there is something I could chnge I am not aware of it. Chang

Changing the extension works fine for me.

    • RE: Downloads

Any .skp file such as the one called Display Cabinet under the materials forum downloads as a .php file when I click on the link and I can't open it. Those links that are .zip files work fine. I got the same results with Safari and Explorer. I don't think the problem is a broken link but I don't know enough about this sort of thing to say.
