Fascinating - I tried hacking a copy file and replaced all the font names but for some reason when I zipped all back together it wouldn't open in LO - I assume whatever Windows is using as the default is compressing the files in a way that LO isn't expecting

So all LO is effectively doing is parsing and modifying XML files and making compressed images for viewports. mind blown

I used an app called Notepad++

Dave, I had no idea that the .layout is just a wrapper for a zip file. That sounds intriguing!

As soon as I get out of bed I’m going to have a look! (Bring on SketchUp for iPad!)

I assume the best thing to monkey with xml is notepad?

Cool... I'm trying it out! Let's hope it plays nice with Skalp!

I have not experienced any issues with Skalp by using the Layers Organizer.

Good to hear.... I did notice it flashes the Organiser window loads between Scene views which is a bit off-putting!

    • Layer Manager: Anyone know of one?

I have always been adversed to adding too many plugins because I use SU as the keystone of my workflow (stability is key) but I really could do with a layer manager now, particularly with multi-floor buildings.

I know jiminy-billy-bob's layer manager is now out to pasture, so can anyone point me to a solution that is robust enough to be used in a 'production' environment? I'm afraid that it isn't keeping up with all the other plugins and something might go horribly wrong!

    • RE: Rendering Software and Plugins

I went through the mill of testing all the renderers a year ago and settled on Thea. The other option was V-ray. It was a close call, but Thea won out and I'm pretty happy with it and it's very very close integration to SketchUp. The only problem is the huge following of v-ray, there is a huge community of people using it. A bit like the AutoCAD of renderers. Getting hold of materials for v-ray is a lot easier than Thea.

The GPU rendering in Thea is so fast and integrated that I don't think it can be beaten, in fact you can stick any old GPUs in the machine and it'll take advantage of them. It also has built in support for Skalp which features very heavily in my workflow.

    • RE: Reconstitute Layout file from Temp? Help!

      Awesome Dave...

... so am I right in thinking that the .layout file is just a zip file containing all the XML etc and if I just zip it and change the extension from .zip to .layout it should work??

    • Reconstitute Layout file from Temp? Help!

I had a Derp! moment and pasted a viewport into a text field on the last thing I was doing before presenting to the client and now the file is totally rogered. So broken that it crashes on open.

I found the temp file but it's all separate XML files in a folder. How do you put it all back together manually?

My plan is to remove the offending page (the first page) manually and open it.

      Is this possible?

      Here's the folder (zipped)

To be honest the screenshot doesn't tell us much, I assume there is a spike off to the back right.
Could you upload a model to look at.
Do you have a clean template, nothing lurking in it to make things jump about, no hidden geometry saved from something else?

Wow I actually found an instance where my machine saved it...

My template is a totally stock one with no kergiggering at all.

      LOL No!
I even upgraded to 2016 and left all the plugins off for that virgin fresh feel and the stupid thing still happens!

    • Help! Sketchup automatically buggering my model!

I have had this happen in the past, but more consistently now SketchUp comes along and autosaves then I get some geometry that is totally in the wrong position. It's normally the geometry I am working on, but sometimes it's something totally random in the model.

Does anyone know what is causing this because it is playing havoc with my workflow.

I thought I would resurect this post because I was looking for a good template for an RGB keyboard.

So I used my keyboard shortcuts in combination with the very good template above to make a Corsair RGB profile for SketchUp...

Yep, I agree with Thom and most of the comments here.

I have had mine for years and only use it for positioning 'cameras' and for getting the view out of walls/tables/the floor when it gets stuck.

It is also really fun in Google Earth!

I think this came about because there were so many LayOut critical scenes in the SU file that if I created a new layer I would have to Update all the scenes with that new layer off. That's my excuse anyway!

This. Not sure why they won't give an option to have new layers default to off in all scenes, since 99 times out of 100, I'm creating the layer specifically so I can have something show in only one scene. Would be a lot easier to turn it on in that scene than go through all the others turning it off.

When I'm working away in solitude I assume I'm being an idiot and there is a good reason for things being the way they are so just go with the flow and bodge it.

It's nice to know others have the same problems πŸ˜„

    • Corsair RGB Keyboard - Does anyone use one?

I just thought I would ask if anyone uses any of the Corsair RGB keyboards because you can do some kind of funky app specific stuff with the key colours.

      Here is my SU setup:

      http://i.imgur.com/KKgURqh.jpg

      Colours:
      Red - Tools
      Orange - View (G=hidden geometry, H=hide ouside group, Q=Perspective)
      White - Input and modifiers
      Arrows - X,Y,Z and inference

Does anyone have the F-keys mapped to anything? I come from a Mac environment so these stay as brightness, media etc on my Mac.

Thanks for the recommendation JQL. I couldn't get Vectorworks to untangle the mess either.
Weirdly I had looked at the page for Draftsight (according to my brower anyway!).

The import problem persists though. Basically:
      β€’ Import something
β€’ Dialogue box appears somewhere off-screen and is impossible to click "Ok"

pbacot - What is this ShetchUp Pro? Is this some kind of new software? πŸ˜‰
