That post has been updated. It IS in fact an April Fools joke. And a bad one because it hits a sore spot for many SU afficionados like myself who would love to see SU reach new heights. Looks like he is a troll after all.

If you look at his portfolio of work it is almost all Grasshopper/Rhino stuff, so doubly unlikely that anything related to SU would ever come out of there.

Have you had a look at Sdmitch Panelization plugin?
Havent tried it, but looked at the tuturial.

I've also been asking around for a long time for a panelization plugin. had a look at sdmitch's panelization plugin and it accomplishes almost exactly what I think we're all talking about, but could use plenty of improvement, e.g.:

-user input for height/offset of panelised component (like what paracloud offers)
-compatible with thomthom's quadface definition, so as to allow panelisation of quad-based surfaces in any orientation

Any idea whether sdmitch is working on beefing up the script at all? it looks very very promising. As far as I can tell it's been around for a long while; one of those hidden gems. It's not on Sketchucation's plugins list.

Maybe Paracloud Gem can make something also ๐Ÿ˜„

Paracloud has been dead for a long time...been monitoring their website for a while and nothing is happening there. Never responds to emails either.

Also, paracloud is an expensive option just for a paneling tool. The UI needs a whole lot of work as well.

      VoronoiXY Error

      Hi MattC

I'm still having problems creating a simple 2D Voronoi. Have attached the file with the cpoints and the error message.

Conic curve seems to work fine...

      Cheers

UPDATE: I see what the problem is. It's still the co-linear points. The plugin will not work if any of the points are colinear in either the X or Y axis.

      Something that can be fixed?

I've tried many times to create self-cutting components, but it never ever works. Have followed every single step to the letter in the instructions, but components refuse to cut through single surfaces.

Anyone else having this problem? I'm running Sketchup Pro v8.0.14346...

      Revit Import Error

      Hi Jan

      Thanks for this incredible effort.

I'm having some problems importing the IFC file into Revit 2013. I've attached the Revit error message and my skp file for you to look at.

Also, will it be possible to create bim elements with more complex surfaces, e.g. quad-based surfaces generated from curviloft, EEby, soap skin bubble etc?

      Cheers

Purge Unused > Purge Unused Layers / Purge Unused Materials / Purge Unused Styles

      Hi Thom Thom

Is it possible to have the "purge unused" function separated into purge unused layers, purge unused materials and purge unused styles?

This would be useful for maintaining the structure of material palettes/ layer templates in models that require separate management of these hierarchies.

      Cheers

Not at all. I've installed the plugin directly into SU's default Plugins folder. Would it help if I removed Fredo's AdditionalFolder plugin?

      Select edges by length(?)

      Hi thomthom,

Any chance we could have a feature to select edges by length? For examples, select edges <X, =X, >X, where X is the length of a pre-selected edge?

I'm doing some work involving mapping of components to edges, and this could be a pretty handy tool to have.

      Ferrari Sketch

Hey has anyone been playing around with Ferrari Sketch? I've spent a little time re-discovering it. It's quite good, and seems a bit more powerful than Soap Skin Bubble, but has some limitations.

Thoughts? Would be nice to be able to insert more than one closed polygon into the membrane.

      How to soft/hide diagonals only??

How does one generate a lofted surface with only the diagonals soft/hidden? This is useful if you want to use the loop/ring selection tools that come natively with thomthom's Quadfacetools...

Currently you have to do it manually, generating two sets of intermediate profiles (in both U and V directions) and merging it with the quadface surface.

      joel

Soft/Hidden diagonals only. Useful when selecting loops+rings using QuadFaceTools.

Any chance there could be a "stretch" modifier (like the stretch tool in FredoScale) when stringing components? Although i guess this would destroy the component definitions.

    • RE: [Plugin] QuadFaceTools

Thanks guys. I'll give them both a go.

On a separate note, is there a way that quadfacetools, JPP and kirill's new LSS tools can come together to make a proper (precise) panelising tool for SU? I'm no scripting guru but it seems like a lot of plugins out there already come quite close. I've been asking around about this a lot but no one seems to be interested. here's what i thought:

      1. Create quadface mesh (with EEby, curviloft etc.)
      2. Use JPP to turn each quad into a 3d "cell" with definable offset thickness
      3. Use LSS "stick group to mesh" to map a selected component neatly into each cell, breaking/distorting along the diagonals to fill the entire surface.

I originally posted this idea and some example images here:

      http://forums.sketchucation.com/viewtopic.php?f=323&t=39992

Didn't get very far, some suggestions to use TGI3D but it's a lot of money to fork out for just one little part of it's functionality. I'll keep pushing the idea periodically.

      UV Mapping onto Back Faces?

      Hi thomthom

Is there a way to get the UV mapping tool within QuadFaceTools to map textures onto back faces as well? I tried using thrupaint from Fredo but the UI is a lot more complex than the UV tool native to quadfacetools. Also it seems to deal with tranformations differently so it's really hard to get the back faces to match the front faces.

I'm thinking this will be useful for mapping textures with alpha channel, e.g. fencing, where you can actually see through to the back faces beyond. Have attached an image as an example.

      cheers
