      maybe solution, convert it to curves(using Fredo's plugins...if it divided at segments) for creating polyline, then use skin and remesh

      Why?
      example, 1) for rhino: developers "hide" this behavior under rdk command(extractdisplmesh)/anyway scene will be so heavy/ it normally actions at rendering process
      2) for cinema4d: realtime engine for showing displ/map in mograph displ.deformer//i think you want such like this

      So Didier developed stl-exporter, so you manage(checking mesh before printing) stl in http://www.materialise.com/materialise/view/en/1248872-MiniMagics.html (free version)... also they have full not-free version(but can request time-trial)
