FWIW, you could open your V8 starting template in SU2013 and save it using File>Save as template... At least you'll get the units, style and camera position that you're used to.

You'll need to set up your toolbars where you want them. And you can make custom toolbars to include the native tools you use and skip those you don't use at all.

Thanks for the help. I figured it was likely to be easy as it usually is with Sketchup, but your verification is good for reassurance.

It's always best to install plugins fresh as it ensures you've the latest versions and it means you install what you need and trim away what has cluttered your folder in the past.

You should be aware that Make is for non commercial activities.

But you can happily run v8 free and Make on the one system. Though upgrading means you lowered your chances of losing work through bug splats.

Thanks for the advice. My use is non-commercial. Does Make function like Version 8; at least in the basics? I don't want to have to learn all over again.

    • Sketchup Make (2013)

I am just getting back into trying to design furniture and other woodworking projects with Sketchup. I downloaded Sketchup Make which I believed to be the newest version of Sketchup. A couple of questions:
Is it better for me to continue to use Sketchup 8 for Woodworking?
If I use Make, can I take my screen setup and plugins from version 8 and copy them into Make (since Make seems to have it's own folder and is separate)?

I guess I'm just asking whether it's better to just start fresh with Make rather than using Version 8 which I suppose will be outdated at some point?

Sorry if this has already been addressed in other places.

    • RE: Importing images as a starting point

Does the imported "picture" need to be an actual photo? Or can it merely be an image from the internet? I've tried following the direction to grab an image from a website, but don't seem to be able to make it work as intended.

Is is possible to import an image or a photo which you can then use to start a new Sketchup drawing? Thanks for any help you can give.
