    • Ideal Workstation Specs

      Hi Everyone,

I've been requested by the company where I work, to assemble/buy a Workstation with a sufficient capacity to finish a render under an hour. Renders that usually take 5-18 hrs. in my current PC.

I work with some big 3D models from auditoriums, buildings and houses. with lots of textures, colors, complex 3D meshes and geometry for sofas, cushions, proxies for plants, and lots and lots of vray ies lights. We usually render from 1920*1080 to 4K at a mid to high resolution.

The softwares that I use are AutoCAD, 3DsMax, Rhino, SketchUP, Vray and Photoshop.

So the question is, what are the ideal Processor and GPU for the workstation?

I was thinking about a Xeon with 6 to 12 cores (24 Threaded) and a Nvidia Quadro with a minimun of 4 Gb. But the IT guys have no idea about Rendering requirements and they are the ones who are gone purchase the PC components, so they are asking for how many MB of Cache and what kind of GHz Speed, I have no idea what processor to choose nor what kind of GPU for the RT rendering.

Budget is around $10,000 - $15,000 USD for CPU ONLY.
Monitors and others components have a limit of $10,000 USD.

Any suggestion would be of a lot of help.

Please give an explanation for the components you are choosing.

      Thanks!!!

    • Vray 2.0 NOT Rendering!!

      Hi everybody!

I have this recurrent problem. Vray get stuck at a certain point when rendering.
When I'm doing a test render everything its just fine. Very low res, low image, color mapping at Fixed or Subd. Light Cache at 500, Image size 600*400. Very low subd for materials, lights and shadows.

The problem seem to appear whenever it wants. Everything seems normal but suddenly, when im trying to render, vray does not get pass 5% at light cache. And just to get to that 5% progress, it took my PC over 2 hours. The only thing that i've noticed its that my CPU gets crazy, starts working at 100% load, then drops down to 14%, gets back to 80-90% and drops back again, so on and so forth.

This problem had happened already several times in the last few months, but just as it appears goes aways.

I have no idea what could be happening, every help would be really appreciated.

      Thanks!!!!!

      MY PC specs:

      Windows 7
      i7
      GeForce GT730
      16 GB Ram
      1Tb hard drive
      250 SDD

    • RE: EXTREME HELP NEEDED!! PLEASE!! CPU/Vray 2.0 low performance!

If you are trying to use RT with GPU, don't. It is not fully functional. If you need RT, use the CPU mode.
If you are doing regular render, at what point in the render does it get stuck? Light Cache? Some more details would help.

Hi, it only happens when its rendering the image, just when the last phase of Irrandiance Map has finished and it starts to render the image.

I'm doing a regular render, is there a way to use the GPU power to speed up the render time? Or you just recommend to use CPU to render?

    • EXTREME HELP NEEDED!! PLEASE!! CPU/Vray 2.0 low performance!

      Hi Everybody!

I'm having a recent problem with Vray 2.0, it started yesterday noon, I was doing some renderings from a scene, everything was normal, output size 1920 x 1080, but then, my last render got idle at 20% in the Vray progress window, I got off from work, though was something normal and let the computer to work all night long. 6 hrs later remotely checked how the render was doing but was still at 20%, I closed it, switch to 1280 x 720 and started again. When I checked back in the morning the render was at 5% and stayed there for another 3 hours and had no signs of getting any progress soon. I always have the Windows task manager open to see how the CPU and memory are performing.

Here are my Computer and VisOpt specs:

      SketchUp 2015 64 bits / Vray 2.0
      Windows 7 Professional
      i7 2600 3.40GHz
      16 Gb Ram
      250 SSD
      Nvidia GeForce GT 730

This problem its happening with the Vray default options, its not even a High quality render, I only changed the system parameters to: Dynamic Memory Limit 10240 / Render Region Division X: 64, Y: 64.
VisMats subDs are all up to 24, not more, No displacement in the render, Bumps are at 0.5
Lights SubDs are all up to 16.

CPU and Memory, on the task manager are always 100% and around 12 and 14 Gb, respectively. But the CPU works at 100% for around 5 min, and the drops back to 10-15% and stays there an average of 1 hour, then stars working again. The memory its always around 12 and 14 Gb of usage. I have no idea why the CPU its performing like that, when it was always all the time at 100% when working on a render.

Now, another issue here is that I have NO CLUE on whether my computer its using the GPU power or not.
I know that the RTEngine option should be at RT GPU CUDA, but I honestly haven't seen any difference between RT GPU CUDA or RT CPU.

I really appreciate any help you can provide me. I really need to get this problem solved soon. My ass is on the line with this renders haha. ๐Ÿ‘Š

      Thanks!
