I then intend to take very high res photos of the various carvings around the building and vectorize these elements in Illustrator.

      Definitely a challenge.
While you can convert the photos to 'eps' files in Illustrator I don't think they become 'true' vector files in as much as it only places a vector wrapper around the raster image. You will still need to trace the image somehow.
EDIT: I am very interested in how you solve this. I have a possible project coming up where I will need to recreate various famous landmarks such as the 'trevi fountain' and as mentioned I regularly need to recreate sections of building for film set VFX.
also, I found this for what it's worth: http://vectormagic.com/

    • RE: A website?

      Ray,
My advice is keep it simple. People are coming to your site to see your car designs not how fancy the site design is.
Essentially... my name is Ray... this is what I do... these are my cars.
Right now it takes way too long to access the designs, perhaps more folders with less cars in each.
I think you are close to a great site that shows off your talent... good luck.

    • RE: Photo to cad conversion - possible?

You can convert it to an eps. file in Illustrator but it still does not trace the image. You need to use a program like auto trace to do what you have in mind. I am assuming you only need rough measurements. My suggestion is since the building is formal in it's design, that you approach it by taking some on site reference measurements for scale, photographing each unique section to avoid distortion, and then measure each section photo separately.

I measure location buildings for movie sets all the time and there is no accurate shortcut, however, I have used a 'laser scale' for difficult places with reasonable success. They are reasonably priced or you can rent them.

So... here's the kicker on this one.

All entries must be submitted under the Creative Commons Attribution license. Among other things, this means that TSI (or others) may use or modify your model, including for commercial purposes, but they must give you credit for your work.

Why the architects' societies love that Royal title

The Architects' unions can be rather pompous compared to their engineering cousins.

    • RE: Contract Advice Please - Deferred Payment.

In my experience 'deferred' means everyone gets paid before you do. This is obviously a personal choice, however, the fact that you cannot benefit by using the work in your portfolio would make it a 'no go' for me. If you decide to do it, I suggest you put a contract together that includes very specific details with regard to a tiered payment structure, a per diem of some kind to at least cover your out of pocket expenses and a claus that allows you to use the designs you create for personal promotion only.

It's a natural substance called carotene. If you binge on carrots they will turn your skin orange... in the eighties they tried using carotene in tanning pills and everyone turned orange.

    • South Africa Feature Film Art Department Crew...

      Hey,
There's a chance I will be designing a movie that is shooting in South Africa. We will be based out of Johannesburg or Durban. If this happens I'll need to crew an art department, specifically set design/draftspeople with experience in set construction. Any leads would be appreciated.
      Thx.

DE, surely they are the more extreme cases and as such dont represent the majority of architects?

Perhaps its only a minority because young freash inspired tal;ent has to find a way to get business - so they go as cheap as possible until they can prove themselves worthy. And hopefully they don't turn into overpriced stagnant firms as they increase in age. But if they do, a new set of young inspired designers will compete with them at a lower price.

There you go. Well said Chris.

I have not yet met great architect or product designer charging low fees. Great design demands considerate approach and a lot of testing which require time. It is as simple as that....
You might go easy on that coffee mate πŸ˜‰ Every time I see your avatar I go and switch on my espresso machine.

I have seen lots of so-called bigtime architects who cater to rich clients charge outrageous fees for uninspired designs and on the other hand I know a few young architects who work out of their homes and design stunning homes for much less. It's all relative...

I hope you are buying 'free trade' coffee. I just got back from Mexico and now pour tequila on my morning cereal.
