Hi Donna, I made this rock by attaching a texture in sketchup and then rendering it with Kerkythea. ( afree program)

Rendering is the only way to go if you want photorealistic. ( I have only approached semi-realistic.)

Any view setting that contains the Shaded with Textures view style. I usually first select any style from the style pallet, then click the Shaded with Textures button. That way you can even have photo textures with one of the sketchy line styles. It really depends what visual style you wish to achieve.
