    • RE: VRay rendering machine specs

      Hi Brodie
After users all having Quad and Hex workstations instead of a farm, now come the time for a real farm as they all moaning of not able to do much while rendering.
I have a bunch of DL580 servers with the following specs:
      4 x Xeon 3GHz
      4GB DDR
      2 x 72GB 15K

Would these be ok to start the farm ? I have 8 or 10 of these to spare, would 4GB be enough to use these as farm animals ? or I should get more RAM for them ? I just done a quick test on two of my trusted PC's with a Q9650/8GB and Q9650/4GB, there dont seem to be much difference in timing, or am I missing something ?
      Thanks for your help.

    • VRay rendering machine specs

I want to use two spare Q9550 machines for v-ray spawns only, do these two machines need anything other than the QuadCore and 8GB of DDR3(8GB max onboard) ? Would having a V7200/V7300 make much difference as these are only spawns ?

    • VRAY Farm Hardware

      V-Ray - Hardware questions
I have a bunch of users all starting to render using vRay, trouble is when they do, their machine are useless until its done, so I am thinking of building a small farm, and I am looking at the following options :

      1. Built 4 PCs with the following specs AMD X6-BE 3GHz overclock to 3.4GHz with 16GB DDR3 (The max any AM3 board can take currently)

      2. Built 4 PCs with the following specs, AMD Llano A8-3850 2.90GHz (Quad) with 32GB of DDR3 (Max 64GB but prices are sky high now)

      3. Buy 2 used Proliant server each with 4x DualCore Opteron 2.6GHz and 64GB of RAM

I heard that vRay work best with more memory, but the same could be said with more cores, I am trying to avoid the Intel X6 route as they are still too expensive for a batch of machines. Also the larger memory are still way too expensive to implement now.

Would be grateful for any input on this one, thanks.
