My experience with Autodesk is that it drains your wallet, is utterly complex to a very frustrating level.
But maybe things got changed by now?....(Can't help to think it didn't though)

My dear kwistenbiebel, I don't think any of the painfulness has yet changed, and that's exactly why i'm here in a SU forum hoping for SU 7.

They did copy the Push-pull though but the Hardware requirements are exorbitant plus they just can't make things simple; They still make you read through a "Phone book" of the size of LA to get a simple answer to an obvious task. Oh it hurts just to think about "IT"

And to make it clear for everyone else, I'd rather pick strawberry's in the hot sun with the Mexicans to make a living, then working for Auto Desk. πŸŽ‰

You've gotta be joking Bruell, a competitor to Sketchup?! Easy to learn? - Compared to what, Blender?
In software years Inventor is ancient technology.
Autodesk pricing, support and upgrade policy disqualifies this as a serious option for me personally. use Inventor, it's not easier than SketchUp.

Annual updates are fine, but there's no backwards compatibility. There's also the regular bug fixes (sorry service packs). Don't install a new version until the first service pack is out!

      [Your'e working for Autodesk right? πŸ˜‰ ]
      .

Let me answer this to you in Google style, at his time in am not in a position to either admit or deny.

      It's all very secret πŸ˜„

Anyway i don't think SU is backwards compatible either, hardly any cad software is; right?
And Yes It's astronomically expensive but i do like the parametric dependencies. hopefully SU7 will have these!!

Since we are into mechanical on this topic,

HERE is the real COMPETITOR !!!

      Autodesk

      favicon

      (download.autodesk.com)

SU should take off some of the advanced features, this software has to offer, okay it's way more expensive but very easy to learn and it gets UP- Dates every Year! Something to rely on if you do 3D modeling seriously.

download the 30 day Demo and see for your self.

I know people who do conceptual architectural design with this one plus it exports to "*.stl".

I saw a guy creating a model for a high rise (stylish contemporary) in his Coffey break, off of a 2d image, later that day I had the printed ABS model on my desk.

*.stl? whats that good for? 3D printing

Sorry this is awkward there is no download for the trial they actually ship a dvd.

Here is a contour image of a model that SU cannot work with, yet it's a breeze to navigate and use in most other apps.
Just the contour lines alone give SU the wobble, now imagine what would happen if I select 'from contours' using the sandbox tools.

I here you Solo, I have to deal with this issue in SU a lot, I usually simplify the contours and skip a lot of them (e.g. use only every 5 to 10 meter intervals). (nobody will actually see the difference in the SU model)

My hope for SU is that they would come up with a way to have the details if one is close up but farther away resolution could be rougher; or something like that.

Finally in this topic i want to address my worst concern, witch is that, could it be that they are putting SU to sleep because it has impacted the major CAD industries to much, like the one whose name is not to be mentioned here who already copied and implemented some of the innovative SU features in their flagship app?

The one who's part of the name is a Desk? and who buy's up the good apps who used to be independent?

Or SU should be given back from Google to the Guy's who made it in the first place.

And maybe we should PROVOKE Google a bit more and then get answers.

Wow man! Cheetah 3D just blows me away, the price the style ... now i'm even tempted into buying a MAC!!!

If SU 7 does not take off soon, I just might!!! Do you here me Google?

They will probably, in good old Google style, come out with it, without announcing it before.

BUT THEY BETTER NOT RELEASE IT WITHOUT 64 BIT AND MULTI PROCESSOR SUPPORT! and who knows, Direct X optional might as well be beneficial.

    • RE: Animated People

The animated people could be the beginning of something bigger like "Sketch Up world"

Me, and I think a lot of people out there are getting bored of the way 3D buildings look like in Google Earth.

I admit it was a great idea to create 3D cities and houses and see them in GE, in 3D.

BUT I think it is time to realize that SU has much more to offer to the Community then only to serve this (again increasingly boring feature) one purpose online.

I would like to see SU evolve into a tool to create fun online 3D worlds and community spaces. Sure there are already a lot of "this" out there but why not use SU and Google Earth in a more progressive/fun way.

I would Call this Sketch Up World. With new ideas like trainable people, trains cars boats that can do things and move in this new created space.

wouldn't be so bad would it?

    • RE: 3 wishes for SU7

The texture wrapping wood be awesome this function was really forgotten in SU; High Poly 64 bit and multi processor support.

Does anyone here know if there is a quick constraint override function/shortcut in SU, or is this another very important thing to wish for?

      I like the idea of getting the best wishes together here in a forum, by all who really care, discuss these and filter out the essence;

Then present a kind of "10 Demand-ments" of the community to Google.

    • RE: Animated People

Yes, i totally agree that in the same way one should be able to animate/train vehicles vessels, leaves falling of trees and so on you name it SU animates it.

But still, I think this should be possible without the scenes basically in the main window; since I want to have multiple objects animated, a key frame manager sort of based on the "out liner" window.

But way simpler then 3D max or any other animation software.

Oh and Talking about windows, I do want to have 2 or more Views in separate windows 2 the same time.

    • RE: Mighty Animation Tool

I like your Reel on the bottom of the window. I think, to have a simple way of managing multiple cameras with this could be that near the left arrow you would have a drop down menu for the different cameras. Just a small arrow that opens the drop down for your camera pick.

And then here another idea, SU should definitely let one use multiple views just like 3D max and you could switch with a shortcut or the rmb on the frame then o activate one window or many.

Oh don't want to forget the praise over your great work man!

Hi how's about SU had like different 3D people that are trainable to walk up stairs or along a boardwalk or to sit down or just anything to make a presentation more alive?

    • RE: Smart scaling components

I agree that an advanced scale tool is due in SU but not only for windows but also to be able to scale objects in relation to existing lengths, like we all know from AutoCAD here you can scale from a endpoint to another endpoint in the drawing.

Same with polygons when will we be able to define a Polygon (an octagon) by its side length and its orientation?

    • RE: Are you ready for SketchUp 7 news?

I'm speechless but tell you what,

I've been looking at a lot of "similar to SU software" springing up around lately but I must say so far none have even gotten close.

And I'm confident that SU 7 is gonna be and SU 6 still is the best 3D tool you can have on your machine!

Looking forward to that mail tomorrow,......
