Glad to see you here!
Not too much time modeling, get some time off while rendering textures to head to the beach, maybe eat aswell
Not to long Eco,Plans really do help

Well have I learned alot since the last post,
I recently started using max 09 for the render to texture feature,well....
Here is a shot of my boat I started yesterday,no textures here in this shot, just showing the shading that Max gives, this is a in game render.
Here are some shots after the textures were added in SU,exported and baked in Max (also in Game renders)
Here is where she is now,the sails were made in Max as adding wind to cloth is a realism I cant manually model, same for the flag above.
The textures in the last 4 shots are straight from SU to KT,Ill bake them tommorow and do some more renders to show the differance, but overall I think this is a killer combo for speedy modeling.
Very nice model tomislavm and nice renders,I especially like the secound to last one, except her rear aelerons* , they dont suggest lift in such a tight situation.Otherwise well done!
Progress, but grrr those masts took ages. The guns stowed and ports closed in this render, the guns alone are +- 25k polys, and they are really as low as I can get them.
Thank you Joppermann,
Glad you like them, and as for which ships I build..I have hundreds of different ship plans of this Era,which ever appeals to me I attempt,I have built Belonna twice before and failed.
I am on Julian Stockwins series ATM and have some of O
brians books,no time to read 2 series so hes next.
Updates :
Much still needs to be done in modeling but I had to see what se looked like in the water
Update Time :
Railings took much time and fitting all the seperate things to the decks and hull is another time consumer.Capstan;6pounder and bits are taken off Leopard as they are the same, just adjusted size on certain parts as this 74 is abit bigger than Leopard 50.
Ahhh I C Rodger,
I assure you that my models are accurate to plans,Ive had this Question before as the bowspirit on a ship rig usually contributes 1/3 of the overall length of the ship. For comparison HMS Leopard being a 50gun is in build a bit smaller than the 1st rate HMS Victory and the Victory has 5,468.4 m2 of sails, more than todays 5 masted Royal clipper which has 42 seperate sails.
Rodger I am not sure what you mean by "extreme" sail plan?many sails?Sail area? Sail to hull ratio?
Ither or I do love these ships and Hope to get Employment on one some day,but for now modeling them is great!
Ive started HMS Bellona 74 two days ago and thought you guys would like to see how it is done in a WIP thread, maybe Ill just hack this one
There are still many flaws and tweaking takes loads of time, and this being the biggest ship ive done to date,it should take even longer.
The water is a addon on the Kerky site, loads of settings but that is my fav.
I think the dent Idea should work, without to much hassels as far as specular goes in game,Ill give it a try
Glad you guys like her,
tomislavm , I did not make these textures, they are downloaded
modelhead ,The dents and scratches sounds like a great Idea,However the currently used texture is a seamless (or appears seamless) texture is repetitivley. To add a scratch in it would mean a side render of the ship as she is now to use as a projected texture which would drop the closeup quality and the overall look. The dents would be easy to model but as said the texture is a nightmare to modify.
Ja Broer van PE
Thx guys,
Renderer of choice is Kerkytea
Crazy nope im off as Ive change city and pc,Cape town has many examples of old workboats, really helps
Ive been working on this Tug for over 2 months now and the modeling stage is finnaly complete,I am however still contemplating adding a small kitchen etc,
I made this Harbour scene to render her in :
And here are shots of her Bridge :
In game she has all her parts working down to the instrument needles
The SU file is about 14mb and poly count 57,000 ,not hard to navigate in SU at all
heres the WIP thread http://hangsim.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=22&t=620
Here is Leopard,I did this thread from the very start to finish :

Thx Gaieus,Ive always used SSB for making my sails,I make them as low poly as possible, the simulator has fps problems if they are to high when switching from port tack models to starboard. But what i need is to be able to add wind and a material to have a moving animation, similar to what can be easily done in Maya.
And of course real water would be nice and a moving ship, but I think I might need a FX department for that
@unknownuser said:
Did you use VirtualDub?
Indeed so,a Tutorial on KT animations shaved hours off "figure it out" time
Thx glad you like them, now to get them to move and have material sails...maybe some ppl walking around and doing stuff.

Finnaly learned how to make these, took 7 hours to render the 500 +- frames at 15fps
This file is 4mb at very reduced quality, the original is 450mb Avi,looks good but yea...
Google is a great source if you know what your looking for, some you get some you dont with regards to drawings.
Close ups as requested :
Note : these are all in game shots at about 50fps,this current engine does not support self cast shadows, but the new one soon to be release has shadows, does wonders for tall ships
I Have about hmmm, over 1000 Drawings that are 10k pixels by 8k,some ships have up to 12 drawings but others can be simple, there's very little guess work involved and the beauty comes off the drawings really,Having some background knowledge does of course help in other areas were things are hidden.
HMS Leopard being a perfect example,The Stern Castle (Back Raised area) has a galley (a walkable opening) and is not flat at all,but looking at all the views on the prints there is no indication of this,I only picked it up on a Artist painting Of Leopard from that time period,so who knows what else ive misinterpreted.
Ive modeled many other ships that did not reach completion stage due to serious difficulty reading the drawings.
