Marius, this is amazing job! I love old ships and all but have always been too busy (well, probably too lazy ) to start a real project.
Glad you posted these and wlcome to the forums!
A little crit maybe (if you don't mind); the texturing in Kerky could be twaked a bit IMO.
-
Hmmm sounds interesting,i have just figured the water and sky out in KT,but please do tell
-
Well, I am far from being a Kerky (or in fact any other rendering app) expert but some bump maps and a little shininess would definitely liven the materials up. After all these British ships were alway painted and one would expect this paint to be a little shiny.
-
I did add 50% specular to the rails but allas..no bump, ill give it all a try tonight, this pc im on now takes about 30mins a render (only to find a lighting error, not to pleasant)
-
Experiment with materils separately from the scene (which might be very complex for just playing around and testing).
-
I agree with Gaieus that the materials could benefit from a lot of attention, but overall very nice modelling - a true labor of love! Congrats!
If you have not, try downloading all materials in KT available and also read the material guide. But best of all is to apply materials that are 'close' to what you want and learn from them.
needs flags and sails, and a wake, to give the sense of wind/motion... seagulls?
-
Welcome. Very nice work!
-
This is Fantastic!! Welcome
I also wanted to make a ship like this, but cant find enough patience and time...yeah, (shame on me ) -
Good to have your talents here Marius. have you masochistic
tenancies?Mike
-
Thx Guys! Nice to find such an active forum.
Umm Mike I can say I dont think I have such tendancies, but worst of all is I cannot fathom why you ask.
As for KT renders,i just use it because it looks much better in WIP post then SU renders do and my main objective for the models are to render well in game, watching my polycount has been the hardest part but SU has perfect control over it,I use no plugins to build these and most of them I draw line by line,1 face at a time.
Oh except the sails of course..SSB is used there.
Here are my Projects (all but the 1st 2) :HMS Artimes Frigate
Arabian Dhow
HMS Fly Sloop
Launch boat
HMS Leopard 50gun Frigate
HMS Ontario 24 Snow Brig
HMS Pickle Schooner
Sea Torque 1948 Cabin cruiser
Seaflower Cutter
Zuiderzee Yatch
Pickle,Ontario,SeaTorque,Artimes and Zuiderzee yatch all have full interiors.
HMS Leopard has its 2 top Floors Modeled (the 24 pounder slaughter room is hidden behind closed gunports due to poly count) -
Amazing job!
-
Thx,
Coen if you like these then im sure you will enjoy my cuurent WIP,The Replica is Moored somewhere in the Netherlands. -
Brilliant Job!!!
Love it!

I Have about hmmm, over 1000 Drawings that are 10k pixels by 8k,some ships have up to 12 drawings but others can be simple, there's very little guess work involved and the beauty comes off the drawings really,Having some background knowledge does of course help in other areas were things are hidden.
HMS Leopard being a perfect example,The Stern Castle (Back Raised area) has a galley (a walkable opening) and is not flat at all,but looking at all the views on the prints there is no indication of this,I only picked it up on a Artist painting Of Leopard from that time period,so who knows what else ive misinterpreted.
Ive modeled many other ships that did not reach completion stage due to serious difficulty reading the drawings. -
Awesome stuff... would it be possible to get some close ups so we can truly appreciate you work?
-
Google is a great source if you know what your looking for, some you get some you dont with regards to drawings.
Close ups as requested :Note : these are all in game shots at about 50fps,this current engine does not support self cast shadows, but the new one soon to be release has shadows, does wonders for tall ships
-
Wow! Great work Marius. You clearly enjoy building the models. I hope you also enjoy sailing them in your simulator! I can imagine that is fun. Is there any way you can make a little movie to show what it is like?
I've sent a link to this thread to a friend on the Google SketchUp team. I'm sure they'll enjoy seeing how you are using SketchUp.

Finnaly learned how to make these, took 7 hours to render the 500 +- frames at 15fps
This file is 4mb at very reduced quality, the original is 450mb Avi,looks good but yea...

Cool animation! Did you use VirtualDub?
Nice to see that not only building can be modeled in SketchUp.
I like your ships, great models!Regards, Ward

Indeed so,a Tutorial on KT animations shaved hours off "figure it out" time
Thx glad you like them, now to get them to move and have material sails...maybe some ppl walking around and doing stuff.
